WORK – « Freedom, Equality, Fraternity »
Blue, white and red are the colours of the French flag and the theme of each film is based on one of the three terms of France's motto: « Freedom, Equality, Fraternity ». This unforgettable film triptych is due to Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski, whose Red will be the ultimate feature film.
Blue
After the death of her husband, a famous composer, and their daughter in a car accident, Julie begins a new life, cutting off all ties to her past. A former assistant to the couple, Olivier, in love with her, tries to encourage her to finish the Concerto for Europe.
Great melancholic work on accepting one's own freedom, this half-worded psychological drama is dominated by an unforgettable Juliette Binoche. When the blues in the sevanouit soul, mourning leaves room for rebirth!
White
Karol lost everything after his divorce with Dominique, he cannot even return to Poland and refuses to become a murderer for money. After having finally managed to return to his country, he entered various companies and fell into the trap of his revenge on Dominique.
Rambolesque story on the insideEquality With regard to strangers, this dramatic comedy with cruel humor is peppered by a very surprising revanchard cynicism. When a loose lover turns into a cold calculator, the disgrace spreads in front of the resurrection!
Red
Valentine, a student in Geneva and model at her hour, spends her time waiting for her boyfriend, Michel, who lives in England, to make phone calls. Auguste, her neighbor, fond of the sweet Karin, works hard to become a lawyer. Without knowing it, all this little world was tapped by a retired judge, acariate and cynical, who thus occupies his misanthropy and his old days. Because at the wheel of her car, she overturned the judge's bitch, Valentine gets to know the old grigou and discovers her low-end mania. Destroyed as well as fascinated, she starts to visit him frequently...
Emotional hymn brotherhood, this deeply humanistic drama with characters immersed in loneliness and intimate staging questions our moral values. When man cannot master his destiny, the red kiss of others soothes the spell!
IMAGE – See life in color
A result of a 4K restoration (concretized by Hiventy) from the original 35 mm negatives, these UHD Dolby Vision transfers that had all the cards in hand to enhance the photography of each work are unfortunately far below the capacity of the format.
Because if finesse and precision are found (details perform with a much better rendering than in HD), the silver texture more elegantly restored, the carefully cleaned copies (with a few dusts nearby), the reinforced contrasts and the high naturalistic lights much better managed (they are no longer burned), the compression problems are rampant and the new calibration of the colors may cause jaser.
Indeed, where the former masters suffered from a much too dull colorimetric palette and purple drifts, the tints today get drunk by their beauty (primary ones gain in saturation) but seem to distance themselves from the source by marking the yellows more than reason. It's beautiful and flattering, but the feeling of being ahead The Double Life of Véronique (especially with Blue) to something disturbing.
But the worst thing about these Ultra HD Blu-rays is that compression that is totally « Strawberries » slut new 4K masters concocted for the occasion... Pixels and other macroblocs are assiduously incrusted, subsampling of chrominance is almost constant and some flashes of intrusive color emerge during certain plane changes. At this level, it is simply shameful!
SON – Concerto, tango and bolero
Remixed from the Dolby Surround soundtracks used in the cinema, these multichannel soundtracks (2.0 untested) intimately linked to composer Zbigniew Preisner show an undeniable listening comfort.
Mixing is perfectly balanced, the dynamic benefits the score, the voices are clear (even in restraint), spatialisation is natural and the rear activity, periodically surprising, serves the atmosphere.
CONCLUSION – Human, Intimate and Personnel
If this exceptional trilogy begins by meaning the fragility of life before reminding us that it is never too late to regain hope, the present 4K Ultra HD unfortunately does not render it justice since visually far from the expectations of the format!
