Hands off, pirates!
In China in the 16th century, a attorney general was appointed governor of two provinces on the coast. Its task is very difficult: to eradicate the clans of Japanese pirates and ranons, while thwarting the corruption that has settled in the highest ranks of the empire. He will then appeal to a small group of determined warriors.
At its artistic summit, Chinese filmmaker King Hu we were present of a flagship of the wu xia pian with a sustained rhythm which, taking place in sumptuous natural sets (while competition favored studio construction), alternate ballets of nervous swords (whose brutal choreographies are the work of Sammo HungThe big boss of the end) and strategy games twists (where conspiracy and other betrayals are not lacking) in respect of the Chinese literary tradition.

Restored from a 4K scan of the original negative 35 mm (a realization of Ritrovata Asia financed by the King Hu Foundation), the image whose Dolby Vision processing was performed by the editor is just sublime (especially since the HEVC compression is controlled there) despite the visual signature sometimes visible from the lab.
The copy has been beautifully cleaned and stabilized, the silver grain preserved and no trace of digital filters (neither DNR nor EE) comes parasitizing the beauty of the place. The definition has a proud appearance (point of unfortunate softness here), the details gain in precision (the texture of the skin, the weaving of costumes, the diversity of landscapes) and the colorimetric palette with luxuriant hues (blue sky, green meadows) shows an increased vivacity (cf. reds). Moreover, the carnation is natural.
Despite American nights (supposed to take place at night but shot in broad daylight) effectively limiting the depth of the blacks (never ink), the contrasts highlight the many reflections on steel and/or aqueous surfaces from whites to very clearly raised shine.
SOUND - Returns money, returns money 🎶
Restored from the original sound negative, this soundtrack proposed in DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual mono is certainly dated (acoustic limitations of the period) but illustrated by its great clarity (no distortion or rust on the horizon).
The acoustic space is therefore narrowed and the voices (always clear) are slightly nascent. However, the (voluntarily exaggerated) return of noises is excellent (the interlocking of blades, the whistle of arrows and the impact of the blows carried) and the score as traditional as symphonic of Yun-Dong Wang Well integrated.

CONCLUSION - On behalf of justice
Formerly known as Pirates and Warriors, this classic Chinese sword movie comes to us for the first time in the world in 4K Ultra HD. A complete edition (the reproduction of the press libretto and 80 min. of bonus filled with information) and particularly neat (a cardboard sheath with a striking visual and royal A/V performances) to own all ceasing business by all fans of the golden age of the wu xia pian. Warning!
