WORK - The cave allegory

Truman Burbank is the star of a TV show, but he doesn't know. His every act and gesture is filmed without his knowledge by an avant-garde creator-director-producer. The entire city is a huge film studio, its neighbours, colleagues, friends and even his wife are professional Hollywood actors. One day, however, he suspects something...

Witness of his time (where television began to erase the boundaries between reality and fiction) and visionary of our news (where private life spreads on the net), this counter-utopia with satirical accents (the comedy being only a sweet illusion) which is cold behind the back makes the spectator complicit in his audiovisual fraud (the staging of the Peter Weir going as far as singing the TV codes of the 90s) to openly criticize a contemporary America « sleepy » (and, of course, the media and its drifts) which accepts the collective voyeurism, the outrageous consumption and the slavery of TV. Brilliantly orchestrated and performed (Jim Carrey and Ed Harris in mind), this upsetting ode to individual freedom endowed with a confusing thematic richness (have you noticed that it is a perverted rereading of the Bible?) has been able to mark the memories.

IMAGE - The world of trompe l'oeil

After a Blu-ray of sad memory (flat, bland and digitally tampered) released in 2008, this colorful nightmare can finally be « live your life » thanks to this UHD Dolby Vision transfer that has handed over the cinematographic qualities of the signed photo Peter Biziou.

The copy was perfectly cleaned, the 35mm grain was meticulously preserved, the geometry was faithfully corrected and the 1.85 ratio was ideally restored. The amount of definition is enormous (see remote shots), the sting (the close-ups on the faces, the texture of the clothes) even when the images are (false) from hidden cameras (softer by nature) and the encoding is very solid.

The voluntary artificial calibration (very saturated hues) is otherwise more nuanced (the primary ones are more sober), the carnation displays with more natural (wonderfully healthy skins that cover with heat), the contrasts are no longer dusty and expand significantly (deep blacks and dazzling whites), and the deliberately supported light sources (after all it is a cinema decor) benefit from increased intensity.

The Truman Show

SON - His life is a lie

Now offered in Dolby Atmos format, the VO immerses us like never before in the heart of this XXL reality TV without denature for a single moment the mainly dilogued nature of the original mixing. If there is modernization, it is with intelligence that it has been shaped.

All channels are judiciously exploited, the magnificent score of Burkhard Dallwitz and Philip Glass (which gives rise to pure emotion) reaches a greater extent, the noises occupy the places with generosity (the traffic of the streets, the unchained sea), the bass box occasionally delivers formidable impacts (the rumbling of thunder), the voices are clear and precise, the field surrounds no longer insignificant (the light beam of the moon, the chattering of office colleagues, the wind), the aerial scene is relevant (the falling of the projector, the rain, the final intervention of Christof) and the clarity of the whole could not be better.

Much more frontal and therefore far less enveloping, the very contained VF is « chained » to its technical limitations despite careful dubbing.

CONCLUSION - Actor of his own existence?

Combining reflection and entertainment, this major work of the 1990s that tells us the false life of a true man, will see him tear the veil of appearances and become aware of his own condition. And then the construction This prisoner of the illusion in which he is locked up will gain his freedom by crossing the mirror (as Thomas Anderson will do in the case of the U.S. Matrix A few months later). Ah! And in case we don't meet again, a good night and an excellent night!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
