WORK – In the shadow of Batman
Towards the end of the 1930s, ‘The Shadow', a former bloody Chinese warlord repented by the magic of a holy man, was New York's protector, tracking criminals and murderers. But his mortal enemy, Shiwan Khan, hijacked the spells for his benefit and planned to control the world by starting by threatening the city with an atomic bomb. The Shadow, thanks to its invisibility power and its ability to read in minds, is the only recourse against this threat...
Focusing on the form (from the straight plans of a comic strip) on the background (the hero is only sketched and the naughty just missed), this black film that totally assumes its pulp heritage counterbalances its casting error (Alec Baldwin is far too smooth for this role) with a proven obsolete charm. A certain cult!
IMAGE – In the New York art deco of the 30
Preserving the large granular structure of photography (unfortunately rough during many optical processes), this HD transfer imbued with bright colors (blues and reds breathe health) strikes by the omnipotence of its contrasts (blacks – a little too – sharp and whites – sometimes too bold) and not by the finesse of its details.
For rather sweet by its nature, even if the pique does not lack biting during close-ups (cf. the textures of the costumes), the image did not merit the use (not so moderate) of enhancement (halos of this one).
SON – Listen to his voice!
Filled with a full multichannel activity where ‘The Shadow's voice comes « float » Through the acoustic space (to reach, by activating a DSP of virtualization in my case, the aerial scene during its first appearance), the soundtrack Auro-3D (13.2 !) reserved for the VO alone shows good spatialization (this is notable during the shootings), some gusts (well felt) of the LFE channels and clearly exposed dialogues.
The DTS-HD MA 5.1 proposals, as well as the Jerry Goldsmith score, continue to benefit from an efficient development and a sufficient punch even if the dynamic is less (on the VO side) and the shyer bass (for VF).
CONCLUSION – Who's hiding under the cape and hat?
Getting out of the shadows thanks to the video workshop, this superhero « forgotten » Shows to us « masked » Blu-ray! A little dated visually but fully updated acoustically.
