WORK – Sherlock Poe

1830. An experienced detective investigates the murders that took place at the American Military Academy in West Point, assisted by a meticulous young recruit who later became a world-renowned author, Edgar Allan Poe.

If his impeded classicism stifles all emotion, this gothic drawer thriller adapted from the eponymous novel of Louis Bayard and led by major actors (Christian Bale and Harry Melling) knows how to effectively spare his mystery at the border of fantasy. And while the glacial and hazy atmosphere of the places comes to embrace the characters with its poetic-macaber accent, our thug investigators marked by loneliness will have to sink into the meanderings of human madness.

IMAGE – Killing winter

While his master's degree was completed in 4K, Netflix diffuse The Pale Blue Eye 1080p! Fortunately, Dolby Vision encoding here makes wonders even if compressive traces (a little colour banding) come, from there, to visit the sumptuous winter decors of the work.

Magnifying the enchanting cold photograph of the chef op Masanobu Takayanagi, HDR technology allows shades of blue to wander in a bright white frame and snoop in a somewhat vaporous shadow. The colours are sophisticated, the contrast management absolutely sublime and the light sources elegant.

And if the lack of 4K resolution remains regrettable, it must be admitted that the definition is exemplary and the details of a formidable precision (faces, costumes, backgrounds).

SON – Decrypt the letter

With a remarkable finesse, this soundtrack Dolby Atmos enjoys a (good) discreet distribution where music (signed) Howard Shore) and the atmospheres (wildness, human activity at West Point) combine with harmony.

All the speakers are approached wisely (those of height included), the LFE channel comes into play frankly during the key scene and the dialogues (full of mind and elegance even if less distinguished in VF) are highlighted without ever eclipsing the surrounding climate.

CONCLUSION – Ice Heart?

Forced to leave his retirement to try to elucidate an atrocious crime, a detective immersed in the genesis of Poe subvert our emotions under the snow to better question the evil caused by man and study the transition from reason to madness. And if it is human to doubt, it is also normal to be captivated when the A/V services made available by this on-demand video platform make us fully part of this mystery!

The Pale Blue Eye

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
