WORK - Hamlet the Barbarian
In Iceland, the young prince Amleth just became a man when his father was brutally murdered by his uncle who then seized the boy's mother. Amleth fled his island kingdom by boat, swearing revenge. Two decades later, becoming a berserkr, a Viking warrior capable of entering a beastly fury, Amleth returns by pretending to be a slave in order to fulfill his vow: to rescue his mother, kill his uncle and avenge his father.
Adapted from the legend of Amleth who had inspired Shakespeare for his Hamlet, this Viking elegy at the crossroads of reality and myths claims to be a sensory fresco of beast's skins whose wild beauty is equal to fierce violence. A macabre and nihilistic dive into Scandinavian animist folklore that enshrines the unique vision of Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse), the fine flower of the inde-American cinema, and the wartime grandeur ofAlexander Skarsgård, manhood monster with animal charism. A piece (well bleeding) of 7th art!
« The prophecy said that I had to choose between kindness to my loved ones and hatred to my enemies. (...) I choose both. »
IMAGE - Northern Legends
From a 35 mm capture, bold twilight photograph of the head op Jarin Blaschke find in this UHD Dolby Vision transfer a weight ally where the Blu-ray, by the unmistakable clear-obscurs, quickly reached its limits. And with an average bitrate of 58 Mbps, the countless sequences plunged into mist or smoke are distinguished by a drastically reduced color banding (but not completely annihilated).
The increased resolution allows the background to gain sharpness (embroidery, non-woody plants of the sorry moorland), the details are even more eloquent (the facial hairiness, the weaving of clothes) without denying their silvery nature (so some sweetness persists) and the light granularity of the room displays with more subtleness.
The almost monochromatic colorimetric palette (nocturnal scenes flirting with the N&B) enjoys more nuanced muddy tones, more consistent cold vegetation and enriched warm hues (the bonfires, the molten lava), and strong contrasts (the blacks are magnificent) allow a better distinction of the elements buried in the omnipresent darkness. Far from being alien (Average Peak Nits was measured at 142 cd/m2 and the MaxCLL at 723 nits), naturalistic light sources show an enhanced shine with meticulousness (light of the day, lunar flashes and incendiary glow).
SON - I Am His Vengeance
The VO Dolby Atmos (24-bit, 5226 kbps) conveys with as much finesse as savagery the bestiality of the story, so that the atmospheric atmospheres (the whistling of the wind, the presence of the fauna, the slamming of the waves) and the bellicist effects (the cliquetis of the swords, the rabies of the bee regulations) enjoy a remarkable amplitude coupled with a tangible authenticity.
The spatialisation that is palpable envelops all along (the back is very much sought after), the three-dimensional immersion operates fully (the verticality that comes to support the emanation of mystical voices, the presence of birds and the whims of the weather) and the score signed Robin CarolanThe acoustic space of a wonderful melodic sphere, made of vrombing brass, tribal percussion and bewitching violins. The dialogues (profoundly guttural here and there) are clear and the LFE channel grumbles abundantly.
CONCLUSION - To be, or not to be
While he marks the axe spirits, this epic Viking drama of sweat and blood is worthy to enter the Valhalla 4K Ultra HD support (end A/V services ready to host the Ragnarök). Skeggsld, Skálmsld, Skildir ro Klofnir!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
