WORK - The human beast
While a strange mist seems to wrap up a small town in Maine, David Drayton and his young son Billy find themselves trapped in a supermarket with other terrified residents. Through the windows, they soon notice that the fog is populated by worrying creatures...
Abandoning the wonderful to tell us a fantasy-horrific tale all closed doors, Frank Darabont The genre is strongly emplaced (gore sequences and tetanizing atmosphere) by adapting for the fourth time a news of the horror master. Draped with a suffocating atmosphere where the appearances of the many monsters are always thrilling and frightening, the narrative takes the time to develop its characters (in particular those interpreted by Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden and shows that the greatest danger to man is his likeness. An amazing pessimism on the part of a Hollywood film, with an understanding of the end (a real trauma). One of the best adaptations Stephen King !
IMAGE - In the mist
Whether in one of the two versions (the color and the alternative in black and white preferred by its director), the atmosphere « vintage » evoking the fantastic old films (which we owe to Rohn Schmidt) finds in these two UHD Dolby Vision transfers a box of choice.
The increase in details is evident (horrified faces, well filled rays, watches that roam) and the density of contrasts improved. The levels of black are thus impeccable (even if the elements buried in the dark are a little more visible in the color version) and the bright light sources (the light passing through the fog stands out more in the black and white version).
In colours, however, if the colorimetric palette somewhat cooled (a blue coloring soaring much more distinct than in the past) sees its primarys more saturated (blood) and its carnation assaine (more vibrant in short), chrominance noise makes its appearance in the thickness of its silver grain.
SOUND - Dangerous preaching
A clear, dynamic and immersive soundtrack, this newly mixed soundtrack in Dolby Atmos plunges us into the horror of the situation with even more success than the previous track encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1, yet a reference to its release.
Overwhelming effects at the back (the movement of creatures, chaos within the supermarket) and supported by more than opportunistic sound verticality (the storm, flying insects, the spider walking on the roof of a car), it shows a permanent wrap in addition to enjoying bass as heavy as aggressive (the thunder, the fall of the grandfather's tree) and an emotionally powerful score signed Mark Isham.
CONCLUSION - Who is the watch?
While a mysterious blind symbolic mist man, this behind closed oppressive and nihilistic to Lovecraftian creatures « trap » the spectator to better question him: Where is the greatest threat, inside or outside? Still as bold 16 years after its release in the theater, it arrives in the 4K Ultra HD format with fantastic A/V features overall and a lot of bonus features. A highly recommended purchase!
