WORK – All-powerful godfather facing immoral police
A man gets out of jail. Not any man. It's Frank White, the greatest crime lord in New York. But the ruthless Frank White also feeds the dream of building a hospital for the poorest. Which is not everyone's taste, including cops who are ready to go down to destroy their empire.
A harsh urban thriller and violent aesthetically neat and deeply disenchanted, The King of New York see each other, in the lights of a tentacular city with agony, orgies and melancholy, and face cops and thugs, all more ambiguous than each other, around a Christopher Walken at the top of his art. Like his Caid « philanthropy », this work still imposes so much!

Captured in 35 mm, these finely rough images look great on this UHD Dolby Vision transfer from a 4K scan of 2020.
The master is immaculate, the silver grain homogenous, the remarkable definition, the details of an impressive accuracy (the texture of the backgrounds attests to this), the colors restored with more realism (the shades are more balanced) even though some sequences seem a little too hot (it can be seen at the carnation), the contrasts perfectly managed ( firm blacks and bright whites) and the light sources, starting with the lights of the city of NYC, otherwise more radiant.
SON – One night of rain ♪♪♪
Stretched even if dynamic and with great clarity, the two 2.0 proposals cannot compete against the soundtrack 5.1... Even less the VF where dialogues take over the atmospheres. Because with a remarkable remixing, the multichannel VO that plunges us into the typical atmosphere of the New York 80s really has a lot of mouth!
Amp and carefully spatialised (see the effects of the race-prosecution and the multiple shootings), she can count on the breadth of her score and the vigour of her basses (especially during the shots) to ensure the show without difficulty... It's also the first time that atmospheric festivals and alleyways of « the big apple » This way.
CONCLUSION – Beyond Good and Evil
Unjustly stunned at its release, this mafia drama in search of redemption, the most accessible work by Abel Ferrara, arrives at us in a superb 4K Ultra HD edition that gives it the tribute that it deserves... It's about time!
