WORK – The Horror Mask
1946. In Texarkama, a small town in Texas, a series of murders is mourning and terror. The captain of Texas Ranger, the police and the entire city are tracking the murderer.
Inspired by « Phantom Killer » who sowed terror in a small town in Texas in 1946, this proto-slasher at the crossroads of genres (of the comedy of that time) takes a quasi-documentary approach to unfolding the known elements of this famous affair (never resolved by the way). The peaty atmosphere of the southern United States is well laid, the reconstruction seems faithful, the atmosphere is heavy (despite the few humorous incursions) and the sequences related to the murders are very effective. More authentic than many of his colleagues, this rather unknown feature film would still deserve to come out of the shadows!
IMAGE – Fear Wave in Texas
Despite the presence of many dirts (white dots and vertical lines) due to the wear of the elements exploited to realize this HD transfer, the image (captured in full heat wave) remains overall in very good condition.
Nette for the time (especially in view of the low budget allocated), deploying appreciable details to the four corners of the wide frame and covered with a rough texture, it delivers resplendent colors (cf. saturation of primary) and contrasts generally in good health (deep blacks from night capture).
SON – From the cries to the cries
Close by nature and lacking in weight, the VO remains nevertheless faithfully rendered and gives great clarity with environmental atmospheres that sound well and dialogues always audible.
Too choked and losing many effects, the VF has its head in the bag!
CONCLUSION – Redo sunset
Between the work (play lost for many years), the many bonuses (rich in anecdotes) and the quality of the record (miraculous in view of the preservation of old films), you will know all or almost (how to know the unknown?) about one of America's first serial killers!
