WORK – An American in Marseille
An oil drill arrives in Marseilles from the bottom of Oklahoma, to support his daughter whom he barely knows but who is serving a prison sentence, accused of a crime she denies having committed. Confronted with the language barrier, cultural differences and a complex legal system, Bill makes a point of exonerating his daughter. During this intimate journey, he will become friends with a young local woman and her little girl while developing an enlarged awareness of his membership in the world.
Far from being a survivor of Taken on the Canoe, Stillwater is a social drama authoring melancholy all Eastwoodian where « The investigation » underground from a worker's rustre consumed by regrets will evolve into a paternal redemption. Weared by skin-flowering actors and composing with the human soul, this existential journey in fashion « crop shock » is as modest as poignant despite some wanderings between the Old Port and the Calanques of Marseille. Under the check shirt, there's a heart beating!
IMAGE – In the heart of the Phocean city
Deeply naturalistic in its rendering, the image with a soft hues (except the blue of the Mediterranean Sea) and realistic reflections is of any kind of clarity even if a handful of planes allow a bit of video noise (due to the source or compression?). Perfectly defined (a 4.5K capture), very detailed (see Matt Damon's hirsute beard) and beautifully contrasted, it invites us to a very pleasant viewing.
SON – There's no truth
Rather calm, in the image of the work that she sounds, this soundtrack which rarely effects the back (the passage of a scooter, the fireworks during the football match) and its dynamics (well besides when Mychael Danna's score is delivered with aplomb) prefer to play with its subtle atmospheres (the urban landscape) and the clarity of its dialogues. But by the way, where did the 3D mixing run in theaters get lost?
Less credible since everyone begins to speak French (while the anti-hero is expressed in American!), the VF is no less frequentable. And at worst, the many English subtitles (unfortunately) embedded will be a clue to help you with the languages used.
CONCLUSION – We all get another chance!
Lead by Matt Damon and Camille Cottin, this beautiful bitter-sweet drama deserves to be lived in Blu-ray... Even if the absence of a 4K Ultra HD is quite incomprehensible given its technical characteristics (DI 4K and Dolby Atmos track).
