WORK - The legend of the headless rider

In 1799, in a town isolated from New England, several corpses were successively found beheaded. Ichabod Crane, New York police officer with highly contested investigative methods, goes to the scene to clarify this riddle...

Freely adapted from the new homonym Sleepy Hollow Legend (of Washington Irving) and carried by Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, this fantastic production to the fabulous artistic direction (it won the Oscar of the category in 1999) and with well-digested influences (the horror films of the Hammer) is a gothic-poetic thriller tinted with mysteries, whose potion concocted by Tim Burton (a spoonful of investigation, a pinch of horror, a big slick of black humour and a zest of romantic feelings) takes us into a world that is both terrifying and wonderful and skillfully confronts reason with the forces of imagination. But what a pity for the trivial investigation and the regrettable lack of emotion!

IMAGE - For the love of Gothic

Excerpted from a recent 4K restoration, the sumptuous photograph (more dead than alive) noblely covered with fogEmmanuel Lubezki We arrive in a superb UHD copy (encoded in Dolby Vision) despite a bit of digital doweling (a light DNR here and rare artificially sharpened plans). Undoubtedly, a substantial improvement over the previous Blu-ray released in 2009 at Studiocanal.

The master's now stable has been carefully cleaned (the film dust is no longer), the definition is no longer staggering (good-bye the grossly upscaled plans of the DVD), the framing has been loosened (for more information at the four corners of the frame), the geometry has been corrected (the faces are no longer stretched vertically), the level of detail far exceeds that of its HD counterpart (the furniture in the Van Tassel family mansion, Katrina's dresses, the scientific material of Ichabod, the trees in the adjoining forest) without betraying the sweetness inherent in the source, the beautifully organic texture (a 35 mm capture) covers its nature and the encoded artifacts (like the tingling in the background) are ancient history.

The colorimetric palette « depressed » (grey and brown tones coupled with darkly impenetrable) display a more pronounced coldness and desaturation better worked without forgetting the passage to warm the carnation (which remains pale rest assured) and breathe life into the Red Cardinal, and the contrast rate has been seriously widened in order to strengthen the surrounding darkness (denseer shadows) while increasing the few luminous radiances (more pimping whites).

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

You bewitched me.

A DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack that offers real multichannel sensations with engaging dynamics (the interventions of the headless rider), clear dialogues, obvious spatialization (even if the front axis is often favored) and a perfectly airy score (signed Danny Elfman) which fills the listening room.

The mix is nuanced, the worrying atmospheres are not lacking (the thunderstorms, the rustling of the leaves) and the bass consolidates everything with firmness (the shots and other cavalcades). Absence of Dolby Atmos obliges, think to activate a DSP virtualization because many scenes will benefit (the most notable being where the child hides under the floor).

Much less breadth and finesse on the side of the small VF Dolby Digital 5.1 even if the LFE channel moves like a devil.

CONCLUSION - And the culprit is...

As two visions of the world clash, the concussion of the high authorities of a lost patelin will be exposed in this macabre horrific tale that the present edition 4K Ultra HD, ready to invoke a pentacle A/V considerably upgraded, will protect from the forces of evil!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
