WORK - Bureaucratic immobilism

A mysterious creature appears in Tokyo Bay. Deprived, the Japanese government is not able to stop the monster when it arrives on land. Quickly, it evolves and reaches a gigantic size by ravaging the streets of the city. The army is powerless. A group of scientists is formed to try to eliminate the creature of the name Godzilla.

Third Japanese reboot of the famous Toho franchise, this catastrophe film which pays a roaring tribute to the original dIshirō Honda (a cathartic work on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) is more interested in the collective (i.e. the government, engineers, scientists, the prefecture, the police and the Japanese self-defence forces that we follow) than in the individual, disembodied in the face of the indestructible threat of this monstrous divinity created by man, symbol of the dangers of nuclear power and the unstoppable forces of nature.

This drama thus makes the bet to follow lengthy discussions in offices (which are also stakeholders) to find a solution to the danger, rather than to show his legendary monster 120 minutes. It is daring but successful, since it reinforces the attacks of Godzilla, carried out by the special effects team at the « vintage », which only become more impressive (Tokyo in flames). With this 29th Japanese opus, little Kaijū has become really big... Before being definitively crowned in Godzilla Minus One ?

IMAGE - Urban destruction

With artistic choices sliced (the use of filters with soft diffusion that gives an aged look and a little hazy images), the atypical photograph signed Kosuke Yamada is magnified by this UHD Dolby Vision transfer.

Clean, well defined (lettering on the signs) and always detailed despite the « false » The smoothness of the images, the transfer also releases sieved colors (green trend) rendered more accurately (it is more monochromatic than on Blu-ray except on the side of the primaries that are brighter) and limited contrasts, even if the blacks here are darker (many better cut, the « Large » night scene is actually much more legible).

As for the brightness and the different lighting, if they do not progress much (a sky often covered a little more « radiant », office luminaires a bit more energetic), they nevertheless make their small effect when his star creature decides to defend himself (the flames and lasers that it project upset the nits). Thanks to a 100GB disc and a flow rate not falling below 80 Mb/s, the encoding is at the height of its giant (no compression trace).

SON - Prime Minister's Communiqués

Extremely dilogued (the logorrhea is never very far away), the original mix delivered in DTS-HD MA 3.1 (VO only) lacks some scope...

A harmful decision in scenes of destruction where some effects are like suffocated (like old films of the 50s-60s). But it's probably an artistic will to stick to the origins of his cult monster published in 1954. However, if artistic intentions were laudable, a more modern soundtrack would have been welcome.

As far as the rest is concerned, the voices are of great clarity, the frontal scene is sufficiently wide (the retro score of Shirō Sagisu generously spreads on the right and left enclosures) and bass roar vehemently (the monster's steps, the collapse of buildings, explosions).

CONCLUSION - Long live Gojira!

Returning directly to The Fukushima nuclear accident, this acerbic critique of crisis management by the Japanese state (against a threat that goes beyond understanding) destroys everything in its passage in this superb 4K Ultra HD edition (more devastating A/V performances than in HD and bonus rounds) limited and numbered 1000 copies !

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
