WORK - Jigsaw's vengeance
In the hope of miraculous healing, John Kramer goes to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, to discover that all the operation is a scam aimed at swindling the most vulnerable. Armed with a new goal, the infamous puzzle killer will take revenge on the crooks in a terrible « game » of which he has the secret.
Historically located between First and the second, this more intimate prequel marks the return of his avenger anti-hero (shown once is not customary as a victim) resuming abuse as in the old days. And worn by a Tobin Bell which shows the human behind Jigsaw, this torture porn as sadistic as playful (traps are still as macabre) revives the horror saga under the best viscera. Do you wanna play a game?
It'll bleed!
Resulting from a 4K digital capture via Sony VENICE CineAlta, this UHD HDR10 transfer that significantly improves the 1080p presentation is delighted by the very stylized visuals (a constant in the franchise) of the director of photography Nick Matthews.
The nicely peaty texture (when far from the 35 mm crado of the inaugural trilogy) added in post-prod is much more visible than in HD, the sharpness of the planes is seen to be greater (the fine details of the faces, clothes and wounds) even during the opening act that uses soft filters (such as an awakened dream), the malady colorimetric palette which is richly saturated (the feverish yellows and fluo greens) is colder (the blues are more glacial and the oranges less coarse), the improvement of the intra-image contrasts is significant (the denser blacks and the brighter whites) and the light sources, well disgusting as it is (the unhealthy lighting of the warehouse), display with more power (the radiation of the radiotherapy) even though they do not exceed 170 nits (for an average luminance of 104 cd/m2).
Surprisingly, compression is far from being discreet on some background (macroblock and surface flashes) despite an average bitrate of 70 Mb/s. Knowing that the US disk is devoid of artifact(s), what happened?

Confused with huge acoustic scans (the rotations around the captives) and equipped with an oversized dynamic range, these two grandiose soundtracks offered in Dolby Atmos are painful if desired.
The spatialisation is illustrated in a wide way, the effects around them are incredibly small (and ubiquitous in traps), the verticality is memorable even if so brief (intruders in the manor, the « player » and greatly limited by the claustrophobic atmosphere of the places, the LFE channel hits strongly (even more in VO), the partition of Charlie Clouser full use of all the speakers and if it can happen to the dialogues to get lost a little in this unleashing of sounds (not in VF where dubbing remains intelligible), Kramer's rustre and dull voice does not simplify things, they usually remain clear.
CONCLUSION - We're gonna play a game
One of the best episodes of the deadly saga, this 10th opus in which John Kramer, alias, reveals himself Jigsaw, increases its gore dose in 4K Ultra HD. The A/V services are indeed fantastic, even if the visual presence of several compressive traces makes you want to use the surgical saw on the manager! Live or die, you choose...
Vous êtes trop gentils mon bon Brice, j’ai trouvé que c’était un gros navet.^^ Les histoires qui cherchent à expliquer l’origine du mal, ça casse tout le mythe ! Cependant je ne me suis pas farci les autres depuis le deuxième volet.
Dommage pour le 3e qui est certainement le meilleur avec le premier… Et si tu as trouvé que celui-ci était un gros navet, faut absolument éviter les autres alors. 😝
