WORK - Gladiators of the Future

2018. The world is controlled by economic corporations such as energy, based in Houston. These corporations run rollerball sports, a violent sport that does not allow individual stars to emerge. Jonathan E. breaks this taboo by surviving games without rules, thus undermining the very philosophy of rollerball and this society of the future: « The game is bigger than the player ».

Avant-garde classic of the 70s, this sports dystopia that denounces violence as a spectacle (which would serve to purge the impulses of society) while complacent in particularly impressive matches, is a Spartacus of social anticipation where the decadent aristocracy (the leaders) of a capitalist system (not to say fascist) wanting to be just (a so-called egalitarian comfort) is shaken by the successive victories of a man (James Caan the shoulders). Always indispensable and more relevant than ever (see the socio-political context). JON-A-THAN. JON-A-THAN. JON-A-THAN. JON-A-THAN. JON...

« The game was created to demonstrate the futility of individual effort. »

IMAGE - Death in Show

Very far from the visual imperfections (too many dirts, a compression overwhelmed by the situation, washed blacks and a greenish drift) present on the master HDR realized by the German restoration company LTEFilms, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer whose HDR calibration was performed by Scream Factory since the same 4K scan (of the original 35 mm negative) operated in the United States in 2022 by MGM from the negatives 16 bits, weapon of an average bitrate seasoned 79.9 Mb/s to present us in format 1.85 (reserved until then in the United States where the rest of the world had of 1.75) a Rollerball who has never been so « Beautiful » Hey!

Facing the previous Blu-ray, the image gains considerably in sharpness (the definition having nothing more to do with) with details that turn out much more (through clothes and decors) and the granular structure, evenly distributed, displays with more finesse. As for its 4K Ultra HD teuton counterpart, it is on the cleaning side that the difference begins to work (particles, scratches and other vertical lines have been perfectly recuperated) since the pique is identical (even if the best compression adds here a stability far from being annodine to the planes)... Except that the distance continues to widen in many other areas.

The colorimetric palette (signed by the leader op Douglas Slocombe) which is now more natural (a life-filled carnation and a green filter to absent subscribers) gives full powers to otherwise deeper primary (of Technicolor pure juice) and contrasts, now much more marked (they are no longer « Old »), show a notable improvement (no pallor comes more tarnishing the darkness like the one that hugs the stands) even if the blacks are somewhat too lean in places.

As far as light sources are concerned, with a remarkable overall intensity (a MaxFALL of 514 cd/m2 and a MaxCCL of 1000 nits), they go well beyond the SDR millings, since they are much better emphasized (light of the day, headlights, lighting of the arenas, reflections) and discover a maturity where they were too impetuous in Germany (whites are becoming more precise).

SOUND - Under the cheers of the public

The desynchronization (other than that related to the source source) of the soundtracks that came up against the German edition being of ancient history, the remix 5.1 (an initial Dolby Stereo track with 4 channels for the 35 mm and 6 channels for the 70 mm) of the VO and the VF can be appreciated without having to manually correct the advance of the sound over the images (the four films at the beginning of the program being back).

Surprisingly dynamic and enveloping (the games of the metal ball, the audience) during the sporting encounters, this soundtrack with the preserved old school patina (soundings of the Dantan) which is mainly frontal delivers dialogues to the welcome clarity. But while the English version is very clean, his French colleague with more prominent dubbing is not exempt from a little breath.

CONCLUSION - Revealing his freedom

While Jonathan E. lets his freedom go by becoming the living body of rollerball, an extremely violent sport where blood flows as much as sweat, the 4K Ultra HD of The image workshop risking to steal the star from him because of his career as a champion. It must also be said that after the collector from the land of « Other-Rhin », strongly handicapped by poorly prepared A/V services (in contrast to this disc), the free consumer of his choices was waiting to invest that the emergence of a box to the height of this sporty dystopia of dreadful efficiency !

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
