WORK – Getting back into the past...
In the near future, Miami has been flooded by the waves as a result of the effects of climate change. A private investigator, Nick Bannister, is hired by clients to find their precious memories. In his last case, he fell in deep love with his client. When he disappeared, the detective was distraught and started looking for him. He then finds himself lost in a temporal loop and discovers aspects of his personality that he did not know before.
Ambitious and exciting, this polar anticipation of the innovative concept, the striking retro-futuristic atmosphere and the cast of talent (the mysterious fatal woman Rebecca Ferguson, the melancholic investigator Hugh Jackman and the devoted assistant Thandie Newton) is an ambitious and obsessive romance dreaming of black films of the 1940s. Hypnotic and poetic, the first production of Lisa Joy (co-creator with her husband of Westworld), Christopher Nolan's sister-in-law deserves to be remembered!
IMAGE – Travel through memory
Even as the Blu-ray is lastingly impressive, this sumptuous UHD Dolby Vision transfer is remembered even better the amber intimacy (the tint that dominates photography) of the cross scenes... Even those where integrations are not always as discreet as they should be.
Without the slightest trace of compression, these images with the exemplary definition present finer details than in HD (cf. the excess textures in wide and close planes), colors with increased depth (such as Mae's red dress) that emerge better in the ambient darkness (the carnation is healthier), reinforced contrasts adding a lot of richness to the blacks (impeccable in all circumstances) and purity to the whites, and light sources whose additional energy (the sun during the rare diurnal scenes, the neons during the urban nocturnal sequences) brings a very noticeable vivacity to the planes (notably those illuminated by the light of the neuronal projections).
SON – Listen to the souvenir dealer!
Solidly designed and covered by a ubiquitous voice off (as clear as the rest of the dialogues), this perfectly balanced 3D soundtrack uses generously from the rear scene to diffuse atmospheric atmospheres (the presence of water) that give life to the places visited.
And if action scenes are rare (there are really two), the dynamics can intimidate and bass shake (the play) when they appear. Moreover, it is not during these moments that the score, enveloping, and the effects of height, scriptually necessary (starting with the voice of one of the characters whose memories are scrutinized for the needs of an investigation), sounds best. No, these are in passages related to the representation of memory... It must be said that the dreamlike aspect of the process lends itself perfectly.
Dispossessed of the verticality of the mixing, the VF(F) SD is neither as extensive nor as powerful as its sister promised to an encoding Dolby Atmos.
CONCLUSION – Should we forget?
Flirting with the outdated charm of the black polars of the past, this nostalgic SF melodrama of old Hollywood invites us to an unforgettable night swim in 4K Ultra HD!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
