WORK – Funny salad in the Toons
Roger Rabbit's on the thirty-sixth floor. Once an animated movie star, the white rabbit has been very preoccupied during the shootings since he suspected his wife, the sublime Jessica Rabbit, to deceive him. The studio that employs Roger decides to hire a private, Eddie Valliant, to discover what lies behind this much more complex story than it seems!
Mid-polar mid-cartoon, this big black film perverted by the Toons' facet remains a completely barred classic even though the technical prowess of the era (the entirely penciled animation that integrates with real shots) are less amazing nowadays. Full of biting humor that addresses adults and not children (we talk about sex, alcoholism and murder), this jubilatory entertainment populated by characters (human or drawn) in color (except Betty Boop) progresses at a very infernal pace. In its brilliant mix of genres, the succession is always waiting.
IMAGE – I'm not bad, I'm just drawn like this!
While the contours of animated characters are now more visible, such as the softness of the trait, this 4K-captured remasterization (from a new scan) reinforces the film's black atmosphere.
The master has been well cleaned (parasitic dust has gone through the dip), the silver texture (rather dense) is displayed with a good consistency, the finest details gain in clarity (at least when it is a real element such as decors or period clothes) and the HDR classification, with warmer colors (it is very visible on the carnation) and dark contrasts (the brightness has decreased by a notch), is highly suitable. The overbidding is therefore avoided and only some key sequences, starting with the cabaret where Jessica Rabbit's glittering lighting and dress are otherwise more intense, allow for increased visual generosity.
SON – Why Do Right
Even if equipped with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack (in VO), this mix remains classic and gives little reason to ecstasy in view of the absence of any hearing insanity.
The dynamic does not play in the courtyard of the greats, the bass have no power and if there are many things going on ahead (including clear and well centered dialogues), the rear scene has a lot of difficulty in distinguishing itself (light atmospheres and that's about everything). As for the height canals, there is only the Toons (cf. the appearance of Sam the pirate) who make a tour there (and only a handful of times).
Even more limited as to its ability to fill the acoustic space (multichannel effects had to use a portable hole to faint in this way!), the VF can only rely on the nostalgia generated by its excellent dubbing.
CONCLUSION – Watch the dip!
A rabbit « under speed », a puppy and provocative vamp, a sadistic judge and an alcoholic detective invite you to follow their crazy adventures within a 4K Ultra HD that avoids, right for the image but wrong for the sound, collective pittery!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
