WORK – Roger Rabbit at Pokémon

After the mysterious disappearance of Harry Goodman, a private detective, his son Tim will try to find out what happened. Detective Pikachu, Harry's former partner, then participated in the investigation: an adorable super-detective with hilarious sagacity, which left more than one perplexed, including himself. Finding that they are particularly well matched, Tim and Pikachu join forces in a thrilling adventure to solve this unfathomable mystery...

This solid adaptation of the eponymous video game, which manages to make the Pokémon live action credible, is an adventure comedy in polar mode whose banal staging and public narrative (the facilities abound) are largely balanced by the credibility of the depicted universe, the care given to the many special effects and the cynicism of a caffeine addicted Pikachu. Good family entertainment.

IMAGE – Attack Light!

Captured in film Kodak 35 mm so that the multiple creatures blend perfectly in the environments (especially in Ryme City), these textured and illuminated images with style (neo-black ambiance a little in the Blade Runner) are well refined by this HDR10 UHD transfer.

The silver grain exposes itself with more finesse, the plans are generally sharper with increased details (the skin and fur of the Pokémon, the clothes, the background), the shimmering colors enjoy darker shades (the Pikachu yellow), nuanced (the oranges and the greys), rich (the reds) and saturated (the blues), the already striking contrasts of the Blu-ray are even more striking here with lighter whites and better cut blacks (the darks are clearly richer), and the light sources are more intense (light of the day, neons, advertising signs, reflections, the powers of the Pokémon).

But large anamorphous format requires (anamorphic lenses were used during shooting), do not necessarily expect images that are always well-picked. Indeed, the definition varies regularly and many plans are very soft with sometimes blurring of focus.

SOUND – Ron-dou-dou-dou-dou Ron-dou-dou-dou ♪♪♪

Amp and immersive, this Dolby Atmos mix certainly does not lack panache (VO to take advantage of Ryan Reynolds' vocal performance).

And if the height channels contribute mainly to raising the action (the presence of Mewtwo, the spread of gas « R »), it is the lateral and rear channels that are most assiduously exploited (city or rural atmospheres) after a frontal scene at any fantastic point (impressive dynamics, maximum openness and well anchored dialogues).

Another highlight, bass are never timorized for so-called « satisfy » the young public (cf. the appearance of the giant Torterra).

CONCLUSION – Grab them all?

Populated with charming bariolated bebeasts best trained in 4K Ultra HD, this black comedy for young and old children respects the Nintendo license. Pokémon, GO!

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
