WORK - A Beast and its Beautiful

For ten idyllic years, the young Mija kept busy with Okja, a huge animal with a big heart, to which she kept company in the midst of the mountains of South Korea. But the situation changes when a family multinational captures Okja and transports the animal to New York where Lucy Mirando, the narcissistic and egocentric director of the company, has big plans for the girl's dear friend...

Just as moving family fable (a whirlwind of emotions) with overflowing humanism as a drama of acerbic anticipation of fierce anticapitalism (a strong ethical message), this singular Okja is a monster jewel intended for all spectators. And from its virtuoso staging to its relevant scenario through its beautiful skewer of actors (Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Ahn Seo-hyeon, Jake Gyllenhaal), absolutely everything sweats the great moment of cinema. A nugget!

IMAGE - The hidden face of slaughterhouses

From an ARRIRAW 6.5K source finalized in 4K, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer is particularly refined and perfectly encoded (a global flow rate of 75 Mb/s) magnifies the sumptuous photography of Darius Khondji Already superbly rendered in Blu-ray.

The star animal is carefully integrated, the finest details gain in precision (the facial features, the crack of the laboratory, the audience in the background at the award ceremony), the earthy colorimetric palette displays more lively primaries (the forests of South Korea, the red sweater of Mija), and the contrasts narrow with accuracy for a constantly legible darkness (outside the slaughterhouse where the super-coaches are parked) and whites (Lucy Mirando's shirt).

As for the light, little marked (an average measured at 185 cd/m2), it allows for carefully reflected light sources between natural light of infinite softness (day) and fiery artificial lighting (raising at 1000 bits). In CSD, they are all levelled and therefore far less realistic.

SON - A little pig, cute and all round 🎶

Wonderfully subtle, this well balanced and meticulously studied Dolby Atmos soundtrack delivers a most immersive sound experience where serenity (in the mountains) and agitation (in the streets of New York) coexist.

The dynamics do not lack confidence when the action comes (the truck break by the members of the FLA), the rear activity is heard throughout (the atmospheres of nature, the city movements), the regular use of the height channels coincides with the narrative, the multilingual dialogues are clear, the music of the Jung Jae-il Envelope firmly and the bass, fiery, add a certain physical dimension to many sequences (the heaviness of the steps of the Okja, the spin of the engines).

CONCLUSION - Cops as pigs

Proof if it is that everything is Bong in the Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host, Parasite), this committed ecological fable will break your heart... Especially as released from the grip of Netflix, it is in all its singularity that she installs on 4K Ultra HD support (a/V performances worthy of admiration) !

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
