1997, Manhattan became a huge prison. Snake Plissken, a dangerous criminal, is hired to find the President of the United States in less than 24 hours, whose plane crashed on the island...
Great classic of science fiction cinema (his anti-hero Snake Plissken became a real icon and the devastated scenery of Manhattan entered collective memory), New York 1997 is an action-oriented anticipation film that openly criticizes American society and remains a monument despite its 41 years of age.
IMAGE – In the heart of a « jungle » post-apo
This restoration worthy of this name (created from a new 16-bit 4K scan), supervised by the director of photography Dean Cundey, allows New York 1997 show yourself in its best light with this solid 4K Ultra HD (in Dolby Vision compression is invisible) and especially very respectful of the source.
The master is now completely cleaned, the previously coarse grain is now in a fine patina, the definition is no longer indigent at all, even if the lack of sharpness remains (a limitation due to the conditions of turning), the details are much more precise (it is visible in all close planes), the colors are no longer bathed and are much more nuanced and more saturated (cf. the green lighting of the mercury steam reverbera), the light sources are not too bright but detach themselves from the ambient darkness thanks to a raised flash (the lights of the vehicles, the flames, the torches), and the blacks are no longer blocked from everywhere and display with a beautiful depth.
SON – Call him Snake!
If the two soundtracks « Ring » In the same way, i.e. with a convincing frontal opening, very marked surround effects (too much?), a reserved dynamic and ankylosed shots (they are sometimes even based in the atmospheres), the VO is to be preferred on the VF which diffuses sometimes reverberated voices.
CONCLUSION – Dead legend?
Faced with the militarization of the state and the social breakdown, this 4K Ultra HD all dressed in black is a hard cook who seeks total freedom without hindrance. And while midnight is ringing at the clock of the apocalypse, the desire to finally reach it cannot be cooled!
