WORK – The dangers of the countryside

Two brothers, Josh and Mike, arrive for a few days in a small town in Texas. They discover that many inhabitants have recently died, or disappeared. When Mike disappears in turn, Josh team up with the local sheriff and a teacher to find him, without knowing the horrible truth that awaits them...

A rarity of the 80s, this nocturnal zombie flick linked to an ecological disaster is certainly not gore but lacks neither mystery (the first half) nor significant moments (the transformation in Dr. Myra Tate, the attack of children in school). The well-known faces of exploitation cinema (Bo Hopkins, Wings Hauser) are displacement, the tension goes crescendo (inspired use of fog), the characters are a minimum characterized (the beginning takes its time) and some interesting ideas come out of the lot (the quasi-acid yellow blood, the scar in the palm of the hand). A slightly unusual amuse-mouth for the mort-vivants.

IMAGE – They go out at night

The result of a 4K restoration carried out by the American television group Multicom, this 1080p transfer appears as a massive upgrade compared to the previous DVD (we finally see something there) even if the excess of DNR completely erases (!) the silver texture of the work (a 35 mm capture).

The blacks are for the first time relatively uniform (the dark scenes are perfectly legible), the colors that no longer draw towards the rose are very well saturated (with few exceptions) and the planes are always detailed (the scan 4K n Whilst certainly not foreign), out of a softer handle, despite the aggressive use of a digital noise reducer. However, this « Cleanliness » (fizzles have been forgotten from here) all artificial makes the faces smooth and waxy skins.

SON – It's too quiet...

Proposed in stereo, the VO ensures the diffusion of the score (an energetic and oppressive score due to the Richard Band) and dialogues with as much balance as clarity even if breath can be heard randomly. Frontal opening is tangible and precise effects (rails, presence of infected).

Crushed (a smaller scale), leaving ambiances moulting (the cicada song loses energy) and otherwise dirtyer, the monophonic VF will only be reserved for the unconditional (if any) dubbing of the era.

CONCLUSION – Run, poor urban dwellers!

Unpublished on physical media in France, Night Shadows (of his other small name) joins the collection anguish of Rimini Editions in a beautiful 3 shutter digipack case with shroud. And accompanied by a 24-page booklet designed by Marc Toulelec (John « Bud » Cardos, cowboy in horror), this film of horror forgotten from the 1980s reveals itself (too properly elsewhere) as never before!

Mutant (1984)

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
