WORK - The Barbie Terminator

M3GAN is a wonder of artificial intelligence, a realistic doll programmed to be the best companion of a child and the best ally of a parent. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant robotician, she can listen, watch and learn because she plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate and protector. What could go wrong?

Sold as a dreadful film that it is absolutely not, this technological thriller that maliciously changes affect during his learning (a sadness in hollow that an update will make evolve into cathartic anger) nouse of the proven theme of the (cyber) doll only to deliver a critique to the vitriol of our ultra-connected society. And despite the visionary strings and far too wise violence, this satire about our dependence on technology is self-conscious enough to deliver us a product anything but defective with elegant packaging.

« Ever since I was a kid, I've been dreaming of the perfect toy, which would keep children from being alone or sad. »

IMAGE - Interactive Dollhouse

Impressive realism, similar to its star doll, the image of this UHD HDR10 transfer from a 4.5K digital capture and consolidated by a careful HEVC compression (an average bitrate of 63.7 Mbps), does not suffer from any design defect.

The stunning definition all along with a visible surplus of sharpness (the background), the details never cease to impress not without an additional texture subtlety (the hair and clothing of M3GAN) and the light granular structure, added in post-prod for a superb film rendering, shows an increased finesse.

Shrunk in its contrasts as in its colours (when there are), the rather neutral photograph of Peter McCaffrey and Simon Raby (Mortal Engines) really increases in brightness (computer monitors, demonstration room lighting, advertising panels) where the saturation of the colorimetric palette hardly moves (or so little)...

It must also be said that, tending mostly towards blue/grey with a predominance of blacks (richer) and whites (brighter), the WCG rarely has the opportunity to express itself (if not with the red neons of the observation room and the carnation, less blafarde). All the opposite of the darkness, whose increased readability benefits several sequences (cf. the murder in the cabanon). Average Peak Nits was measured at 258 cd/m2 and MaxCLL at 521 nits.

It's a doll that doesn't... 🎶

Not adventurous to any unfortunate creation, the VO Dolby Atmos (16-bit, 2974 kbps) evolves with skill between softness (subtle atmospheric atmospheres) and ferocity (destructive effects) without ever letting itself overflow.

From the distribution of sound elements (rounds are carefully pressed) to their accuracy, not to mention a powerful dynamic and powerful bass when necessary, everything helps to develop a great acoustic immersion... If this is a few failures on the side of verticality (a break of ice in the intro, birds and domestic AI Elsie), even though it is particularly demonstrative at other times (as for the sound of an evacuation alarm and sparks during the final confrontation). The dialogues are clear and the music ofAnthony Willis, well present, as wide as enveloping.

Available in Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 (768 kbps), the VF is more than correct at its level. The power is there, the spatialization also (even if less rigorous), and the dubbing does not overflow on the original mixing. In the same way as in VO, M3GAN's moderately robotic voice is ideally transcribed.

CONCLUSION - Child friend 2.0?

Far from counterfeiting, this « Chucky babysitter » which gives to think about the dangers of AI (and more generally on the risks of hyperconnection) increases its data in 4K Ultra HD from through A/V services to unsimulated excellence. More than a toy, she's family!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
