In the lowlands of Hong Kong, a veteran cop and his young superior must team up to arrest a killer who attacks women, leaving their hand cut for signature only. When all their leads blow, they decide to use a young offender as bait...
In the Se7en, Limbo is a visceral polar in black and white expressionist, with extreme violence and characters in full atonement (the actors are monstrous), which probes the darkness of humanity in a morbid urban purgatory, a theatre of sordid crimes where putrefaction permeates every plan. And with its sophisticated staging that only magnifies the crushing of beings « live » as she searches, Self Cheang sequester us in a nightmare awakened with pregnant moisture and at the border of complacency (the revelation Cya Liu where everything is only despair. Attention, radical work!
Otherwise better controlled in UHD HDR10+ thanks to a tenfold dynamic range, this sumptuous black and white (made out of a color shooting) benefits from a stunning shade (the Blu-ray is too greyish) and light areas with reinforced impact (urban lighting, wet surfaces).
The encoding is also much better (the artifacts around the finest textures have disappeared) despite some traces of color banding, the light digital noise present on the source reveals itself without shame (the Blu-ray is filtered), the definition is excellent and the details are displayed with an even more striking sharpness (the close-ups being softer in HD) even though a bit of cluttering still appears there.
Full of rain, urban atmospheres (road traffic), industrial noises, craspec effects (the buzzing of flies) and voices in the background, the VO proposed in DTS-HD MA 5.1 throws us violently into the garbage.
The rabies dynamic, the bass are brutal, the narrative clarity is never taken in default (dialogues are clear and intelligible), the melancolico-lyric score of Kenji Kawai faithfully passes through the five enclosures and the spatialization is extremely enveloping (the surround activity is ultra pronounced). May I give you some advice? Activate your virtualization DSP as a matter of urgency.
Physically and emotionally painful, this fetichist serial killer hunt is taken from an even wilder nihilism in its 4K Ultra HD edition (uncompromising A/V performances)!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
