WORK - The Thing of the deep
A team of geologists is studying the exploitation of oceanographic resources off Florida at a depth of 3,500 m. During an exit, one of the mission members discovered the wreck of a Soviet ship. Back on board, he presents the symptoms of a genetic mutation that extends to other staff members...
Despite a finale that takes water (in the last few minutes) and trouble writing, this submarine clone ofAlien where a Lovecraftian creature (designed by Stan Winston) any right out of The Thing sows death in the baseAbyss, is a fantastic series B of the overly underestimated 80s that plunges gradually into horror not without a good dose of suspense. The artistic direction works even if under influence and the actors, then at the top of their career (Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Amanda Country, Daniel Stern, Ernie Hudson), make it seem unimaginable. In short, a generic of choice for fans of the genre!
IMAGE - The Great Blue
Coming from a new 4K scan of the 35 mm interpositive (not the original negative), this solid-looking UHD Dolby Vision video presentation is quite impressive. In fact, it turns out to be a massive upgrade compared to the HD master operated in 2014 by Shout! Studios. Out of respect for my eyes (a vulgar upscale of the DVD Zone 1 MGM) and for the Ops leader Alex Thompson, I could not resolve to compare it with the French record of the pirate editor Rone.
Excellent cleanliness (no dirt on the horizon) and remarkable stability, the image encoded on a BD-100 with a high binary flow (an average bitrate of 99.3 Mb/s) is provided with new details (close shots on the faces, scaphandres, runners, graphic horrors), a more vibrant colorimetric palette (blue greats, red lights) and otherwise better managed contrasts where dark areas with densified blacks share the places with light sources, such as equipment lights, at increased intensity (light peaks were measured at 1061 Nits for an average luminance of 170 cd/m2). But if the film aspect is there, there is no doubt that a light DNR has been applied in view of its discretion.
SOUND - Under the ocean, under the ocean 🎶
With its voices poorly centered on metallic hardness, its rear scene so sub-mixed that it becomes vague and its rendering stifled, let us quickly drown the soundtrack 5.1 (which evokes the dark hours of MGM DVDs with artificial mixing) to interest itself in the excellent soundtrack 2.0 surround (appearing to come from the Dolby SR operated during its release to the theaters).
A little less precise at the back but so much more immersive by its remarkable clarity, it makes the best use of the speakers at its disposal to deploy worked effects/ambiences. The dialogues are here delivered distinctly, the partition of Jerry Goldsmith Sounds good and the bass don't figure.
By the way, activate a virtualization DSP to enjoy a verticality far from being annodine (the pressure of the depths, the water pipes, the compression of the sheet metal).
Do we touch the bottom?
If it can't compete with its illustrious models, this friendly counterfeit bisserie returns to the surface in an ultra HD 4K that really does not miss the air... It must be said that the A/V services are very resistant to pressure!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
