WORK - Strangers in the Night

During a road-trip in love, a young couple breaks down and has to stop in an isolated Airbnb house in Oregon. All night long, with no apparent motive, they are terrorized by three masked strangers.

A dreadful darkness, home invasion particularly trying The Strangers had been able to mark the minds in 2008. Sixteen years later, the first part of this « re-imagination » soft-core cut into three parts (turned simultaneously by the mercenary Renny Harlin) is very pale in comparison, even if formally treated and sufficiently tense. The scenario is predictable, the worst clichés of the genre pull and the star couple, detestable city dwellers, is devoid of any charisma. To be up to its model, this human game hunt better get out of the woods in its two remaining chapters...

« - Why are you doing this to us? - Because you're here. »

IMAGE - Chalet for two...

Very good as a whole, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer to invisible compression (an average bitrate of 78.7 Mbps that is perfectly resistant to external fog) yet accuses an occasional wave of its blacks (impenetrable the rest of the time) coming abnormally lightening the ambient darkness. It is fortunately rare (a handful of plans), but rather visible when the places are nearly 90% weakly lit.

Generally excellent (if this is a sweetness of « courtesy » on the faces of the two actors when they first appear on the screen), the level of detail gains in finesse and sharpness on its counterpart 1080p (the skin grain, textile fibres, interior decoration, the vast surrounding woods). More realistic, the colorimetric palette that loves itself in yellow tones and shades of brown sees the audacity of its primaries (especially the reds) and the luxuriance of the intense greenery. As for the contrasts, more precise in the shadows, they display enhanced light sources even if, except for the headlights of the vehicles, not very intense by nature (sweet lighting of the house, the night glow).

HIS TOC! Toc!

Limited because of the confined space of a large part of the story (for a feeling of increased isolation), the VO Dolby Atmos (24-bit, 4131 kbps) releases it however as soon as it adventures outside. In these moments, all channels actively participate in tracking with numerous sound effects projected in all directions (life, flora and killers). And even if more « silent » in (less in the cabins), directionality officializes to very precisely position the threat (which does not remain fixed) in the rooms of the rental.

Dynamics « Scared » during jumpscares, dialogues are a certain intelligibility, the anxiogenic partition of Justin Caine Burnett Unreservedly wrapped, well strained bass amplify the impacts and verticality, always suitable (water from the shower, the rustling of the leaves, Ryan in a storage room of the floor), marks by its proximity.

The VFQ (448 kbps) is less balanced and shows a more bleak tension, but it is a good step below its 3D consœur without demeriting (spatialisation and efficient scale). The dubbing, almost without accentuation, does not overflow by the original mixing despite a recording volume a little stronger than in English.

CONCLUSION - Come in, it's open!

Relying on its only concept, clumsyly singed by the original, this new adaptation having nothing to offer new (and thus addressing those who do not know the previous episodes) delivers a game of the cat and mouse quite classic, which the present 4K Ultra HD nevertheless manages to make more stressful. Attention, there's someone in the window!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
