WORK – Impossible redemption

At the age of sixty, Michael Corleone wants both to reconnect with his family, to distance himself from the mafia activities of his family and to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of society, especially the Church... But his past life and his former enemies will catch him faster.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the conclusion of the most celebrated saga in cinema history, Francis Ford Coppola offered him a new baptism (The Sponsor, epilogue: The death of Michael Corleone) by creating a new montage. Finally, reflecting the original intentions of his author (Mario Puzo) and his director, he has a new beginning, changes of scenes and a new end.

A devastating emotional power, this « Grand Final » now similar to an ecclesiastical elegy is seeking forgiveness. Better structured and less sentimentally free, this final part with masterly distribution, tense narrative and majestic staging, is no longer the poor parent of Corleone but the worthy heir of the family!

IMAGE – The Mafia in the Vatican

Captured in 35 mm and more recent, the images of this 3rd part, from a 4K scan capped by Coppola himself, are magnified by this UHD Dolby Vision transfer. By comparing it with the 2008 Blu-ray edition (the Coda version did not yet exist), the differences are also quite striking!

The silver patina deals with a greater finesse, the master is perfectly cleaned (proof of a careful restoration), the contribution of definition shines to the eyes (cf. the broad planes) and the details are much more sliced (the facial textures, the decorations of the Teatro Massimo).

The colorimetric palette that is otherwise more « neutral » (Sicica is no longer covered with an invading red-orange dye) let its primarys live (blue sky, red blood, green grass), contrasts are better set (deeper unblocked blacks and brighter white unburned) and light sources drape with a whole other majesty (domestic lighting, daylight).

SON – Don't hate your enemies

More modern and committed, the VO Dolby TrueHD 5.1 of this latter part opens up to a more carpentous rear presence (the echoes in the Vatican) and to basses with the increased vigour (the attack of the helicopter). More demonstrative without abusing its effects, this soundtrack with clear dialogues (this is estimated in The Godfather) and wide music (which penetrates all channels) is a « opera » to her alone!

Quite powerful, well distributed and offering a dubbing that correctly integrates with the rest of the mixing, the VF still lacks precision in the face of its lossless conœur.

CONCLUSION – One hundred and one thousand

At the twilight of his life and tormented by his sins, Michael Corleone was refused the absolution in this version Coda (an Italian musical term meaning the epilogue of a song), mea culpa d'un filmmaker whom the present 4K Ultra HD serves especially well!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
