Work - Hang without hitting!

A mother and her nine-year-old son looking to start a new life jump on an opportunity not to let go, an affordable mansion in New Orleans. When they understand that he is haunted, they contact a priest who in turn asks for the help of a paranormal expert, a medium and a grumpy historian.

Owned by clichés and stripped of the slightest soul (a strictly harmless Disney production), this failed attempt to revive the franchise The Haunted Mansion is just a fantastic comedy a Cartoonesque hair to transparent staging and to the unshakeful talk (the mourning remains on the doorstep) that refuses any real fear. The good child humor, the profusion of special effects (mixing practical effects and VFX) and the fun of a part of the casting (Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson and Danny DeVito) should nevertheless fill the youngest spectators. Don't come in, there's nothing to see!

« I'm too old to die. »

The result of a digital shooting in 6.5K (and finalized in 4K) with anamorphic optics, the retro-bario-photography of Jeffrey Waldron is securely reproduced by this UHD HDR10 transfer despite not always invisible compression in low light (a slight noise). There is no doubt that a higher average bitrate (measured here at 53.7 Mbps) would have solved this minor inconvenience.

The definition and level of detail (including costumes and accessories) are at the height of the support even though the CGIs are a little less attractive, the feeling of sharpness vis-à-vis the Blu-ray gains a few points (the backgrounds in the background) and the colorimetric palette, with intelligently targeted desaturation and sepia brown hues, enriches with a wider spectrum during the fantomatic appearances (generally bluish) and/or ethereal manifestations (notably green and violet).

The contrasts, finely adjusted to strengthen the atypical darkness to the ashlight that occupies the place (the blacks are therefore rarely abyssal), show a generally soothing brightness (an average luminance of 151 cd/m2) while accentuating the vivacity of the most fiery light sources (such as flames and supernatural entities) that attach beyond the 400 nits with peaks up to 1019 nit (the photo flash).

Le Manoir Hanté (2023)

Who you gonna call? 🎶

If you have to adjust the volume (a low recording level) so that the many informations of the Dolby Atmos track come to haunt you, this 3D soundtrack that fully engages the channels at its disposal (the lateral and rear speakers really do not fail) delivers eloquent spatialization so that « Attraction » acoustic triggers the expected (small) chill.

Dynamics know how to be offensive as soon as Alistair Crump wanders around, the effects (starting with the gnawing of the old building) and other macabre atmospheres (linked to the mood and the movements of ghosts) emanate from all directions, the touch of aerial activity is well felt (the waves that crush on Ben's head, the session of spiritism in the mansion), the dialogues and voices off are clear, the sadly forgetable score of Kris Bowers (not Danny Elfman which wants) is spacious and the basses are robust as needed.

Despite a lower return quality (a more narrow soundscape with not as precise noise) due to a reduced encoding, the VF offered in Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 format draws very well.

CONCLUSION - Dream Airbnb?

Far from the artisanal charm of the original attraction, this ghost train tour with limited sensations will give you nothing but a little family frizz... Fortunately, the 4K Ultra HD leaves the queue and provides the indispensable adrenaline to the home-cinephiles (an A/V performance that is otherwise more exciting than the froussard work they present)!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
