WORK - Last Action Hero

In front of his typewriter, François Merlin lets his imagination overflow... In Mexico, a secret agent telephones a public booth when a crane takes it and throws it into the ocean where it serves as a pasture for sharks. This is the beginning of Bob Saint-Clar's new adventure...

While the dedramatization of rape (turned in ridicule here), the banalization of sexual assaults and homosexual discrimination are the pathetic reflection of a very fortunately past epoch (especially as they are exposed in a popular comedy), this casual classic of French comedy invents a double life (to better avenge the true sublime that it) through a cunning spy parody (so bad novels to the SAS) which makes « Toc Toc Badaboum » (in addition to making emulations like the series of OSS 117 with Jean Dujardin).

Philippe de Broca then found Jean-Paul Belmondo after Cartridge, The man of Rio and Chinese Tribulations in China to light with humour (the self-deteriority of the actors being there for many) the process of literary creation. Between two James Bond More or less first degree, this very removed work that escapes the gravity by jovially praising the dream, thus evolves to the sandstone of the state of mind and disappointments of its author who lives his life by proxy... Until the emancipation that a jet of manuscript from a balcony will come to endorse.

« This is Bob Saint-Clar, I'm listening! Oh yes, good morning, sir. The routine, sir, the routine. You say? Eat by a shark? Ah! In a phone booth? Yeah, fine. »

IMAGE - Mexico, spy nest

Produced in 2023 Studiochannel from the original negative 35 mm, this 4K restoration performed by L-Image Found Unfortunately, the result is quite convincing (despite a fluctuating flow rate of 5 Mb/s).

The stability of the images is constant, the imperfections present on the film have been carefully erased (requiring 120 hours of digital work), the increased definition gives precision to the background and the details display with an unprecedented finesse (faces, costumes, decorations) if this is during composite planes (generic, chained melts), visually below because with rough boundaries and a heavily manipulated silver texture while the grain is homogeneous the rest of the time.

Yes, but here's the way the food laboratory is visible... The colorimetric palette may be revived (less fad primary) the new calibration is sometimes inconsistent from one plane to another with the intrusive presence of yellow and green hues (this is notable when passing through jetski), and the rather dull contrasts leave blacks, although denser than in the past but able to shoot on the green. There is nothing to blame, however, for the solid light sources, now more realistic (light of the day, artificial lighting of Tatiana's house) and delivering a high luminance that is better covered (reflections on water, sunny sky, explosions).

SOUND - A Cachu?

While the version 3.0 proposed on the 2013 Blu-ray has gone away, the original mono-mix digitally restored from the negative sound and encoded in DTS-HD MA 2.0 format is still a perfectly balanced soundtrack that does not lack resources.

The dynamics of the era are intact, the detachment of atmospheres and other effects is evident (including shooting and rain), the cleanliness of the signal is amazing (no breath or distortion), the intelligibility of the dialogues is appreciable and the presentation of the music of Claude Bolling is done without saturation.

CONCLUSION - Doctor Merlin and Mister Saint-Clar

For its 50th anniversary, this cult film with eternal « Bebel the Magnificent » a 4K Ultra HD edition (proposed in a lovely digipack two shutters surmounted by a shroud and accompanied by an unpublished booklet of 24 pages) so that Bob Saint-Clar's 43rd tribulation relives as on the first day. However, is the UHD disk the support of the situation? If the acoustic performance does not suffer from any contestation, the visuals unfortunately drag the signature of the laboratory being responsible for restoration. Is that bad? Far from it! Is it really photo-friendly? Not at all! Come on, it's okay this time. Move!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
