Hola! ¿Cómo está?
Since 12 April 2025, the Maurice-Genevoix media library of the city of Blois has been offering an original cycle around Latin America. Based on immersive photo exhibitions, workshops of all kinds, projections and podcasts, the aim is to cross the ocean and offer a journey in the image of the one lived by Orane and Clémence who travelled through Bolivia, Peru and Colombia to discover indigenous art. They discovered many artistic projects that they wanted to share when they returned to France. If you're also thirsty for adventures and you're in Loir-et-Cher, make a little stopover in Blois! The Latin America cycle will end on Saturday 14 June 2025 and the news is accessible Here.
As part of this cycle, the new episode of Mag.7 melts into the mould to offer you a selection of DVDs coming straight from South America. Etienne and Sébastien, President of The Next Meeting, lent themselves to the game with passion and friendliness. Between local productions and films of different nationalities taking place on the continent, this special episode proposes to rediscover cult works, but also to highlight past titles unnoticed in our countries. Opinion of The Next Meeting (Etienne) : This is the first film by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is also the first segment of his trilogy on Death with 21 Grams and Babel. Each destiny followed by the film represents a social class, and the director does not hesitate to draw a harsh and unfiltered portrait of Mexican society. In particular, we are thinking of Los Olvidados Luis Buñuel in his abrupt vision of the poorest neighbourhoods. The director is already showing impressive mastery, whether in terms of editing, narrative coherence between the three parties, or in terms of the leadership of irreproachable actors. We can only regret that not all chapters were the same power as the one featuring Gael García Bernal's family, which might have allowed the title to be totally blameless. Nevertheless, for a first film, it remains a master's move.

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : In perpetual movement and carried by actors in tune, this heroic odyssey filled with visual fulgurations and epic (never free) adventures is a great adventure film with rare realism (dialogues are in Yucatec Maya, trying violence and remarkable artistic work), whose parable on the end of a civilization is memorable. A primitive and visceral survival with sumptuous exoticism that summons the spirit of Predator.
Opinion of The Next Meeting (Sebastian) : If his last High-risk flight he has not been able to convince and that he is now known for his frakking rather than his films, it is still good to remember that Mel Gibson is a talented director. Braveheart, You will not kill... and above all ApocalyptoAs far as I'm concerned! A sumptuous dive into the world of the Mayans – even making a film entirely in their language – colorful, bestial and grandiose. That stands out for its sumptuous decorations and makeup. A time journey that turns into a tense and effective manhunt, which reminds a little of the Predator John McTiernan. What makes it soApocalypto a feature film as impressive as it is fun.

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Etienne) : After the success of English Connection and ExorcistWilliam Friedkin delivers his version of Salary of fear Clouzot. Apocalyptic shooting will define the incredible atmosphere that one feels during viewing. A dry film is desperate, in a humid tropical atmosphere that will serve as a model for many upcoming films (Predator, Apocalypto...). The band Tangerine Dream's BO also prefigures the sounds of the upcoming 80s. In short, a long invisible classic whose influence is no longer to be demonstrated, and for many the best film of Friedkin. To see (live) absolutely!

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Sebastian) : If the whole presents itself as a metaphor for a revocation, Aguirre appears as a purely metaphysical work. With its very naturalistic tone, unique to Werner Herzog, the feature film can be seen as a kind of making of filming. The latter has experienced many problems, which appear on the screen. Notably Klaus Kinski's presence, his character being just as detestable as the actor himself. And it's clearly this hybridization that makes Aguirre Just as imperfect as it is captivating.

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Etienne) : Inspiré d’un braquage réel ayant eu lieu en 2006 à Buenos Aires, Le Braquage du Siècle, est une comédie très sympathique, Emporté par des acteurs irrésistibles, véritables trognes comme on en voit trop rarement, et par un montage alterné dynamique, le film se révèle un vrai petit bonheur de cinéma. Dont on ressort avec un sourire satisfait. Le cinéma argentin nous réserve encore de belles surprises.

Opinion of MaG (KillerS7ven) : Tuer le possédé, c’est devenir le possédé et se condamner soi-même. Une règle simple est pourtant plus pernicieuse qu’il n’y paraît dès lors que le Mal se propage partout et ne nous doit rien. À l’omnipotence de la religion, Demián Rugna préfère la totalité du Mal. Plutôt que des prises aux plans serrés, le réalisateur argentin opte pour un format scope en parfaite adéquation avec une horreur diffuse. Quand le mal approche, les ombres s’affolent, la nature se fait sourde. Littéralement. When Evil Lurks détourne le décalogue et son cinquième commandement en proposant une variation horrifique du mythe d’Abel et Caïn, qui condamne par le meurtre à l’errance. Le monstre qui couve en nous a-t-il vraiment besoin du Diable pour s’exprimer ? C’est la violence du voisin, du propriétaire terrien, de l’administration, de la famille. La violence de la vie. En renouvelant le mythe de l’exorcisme dont les produits dérivés sont depuis longtemps devenus des caricatures ambulantes, Demián Rugna porte le genre à une tout autre échelle.
Opinion of The Next Meeting (Sebastian) : Si vous chercher la définition d’un roller coaster, When Evil Lurks pourrait en être l’exemple parfait ! Telle une lente montée de montagne russe, le film prend son temps pour poser ses personnages et son ambiance. Nous faisant entrer dans un univers ô combien malsain et palpable. Et une fois arrivé à son point culminant, le film nous fait vivre une violente descente aux enfers, qui ne semble jamais s’arrêter. Le tout bénéficiant d’un rythme démoniaque et d’une brutalité assez surprenante, donnant ses lettres de noblesse au cinéma horrifique. Il faut peut-être notifier une baisse de régime lors de sa dernière partie, mais When Evil Lurks reste un divertissement d’une redoutable efficacité. Qui – il faut bien le notifier – permet de nous offrir par ses champs argentins à tout autre visage de l’Amérique du Sud.

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : In the meanderings of a love passion (loves Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung) imbued with sweet bitter melancholy, Wong Kar-wai (As Tears Go By, Our wild years, In the Mood for Love) weaves a fresco as poetic as it is visceral, mixing memories, where love and pain dance on the unstable thread of the razor. An invitation to feel, to reflect, to love and to cry, which depicts the beauty and fragility of human love with a tearing honesty.
Opinion of The Next Meeting (Etienne) : Prix de la mise en scène à Cannes en 1997, Happy Together est le premier film de Wong Kar-wai reconnu en Occident. Plus qu’un récit, on a plutôt affaire ici à un cinéma viscéral fait de sensations et magnifiquement photographié par Chris Doyle, qui a iconisé de façon assez définitive les deux acteurs perdus dans Buenos Aires. Les choix musicaux composés de musiques locales, renforce encore plus l’atmosphère profondément mélancolique du métrage. Le film est comme un air de tango, beau, triste et entraînant à la fois !
