Whether in stores, video clubs or in the media, DVD/Blu-ray rays are much more than a physical catalogue. Choosing a movie in a bin is also a moment of exchange and sharing. You just have to come across a look, come out a few words, and a very long and passionate discussion can immediately result. Wishing to reproduce this kind of encounter, the association The Next Meeting offers you a show, Mag.7, with the aim of highlighting certain titles, as cults as forgotten. And above all, to leave the word to various people for whom cinema is an important part of their lives.

mag.7

It was the next session!

What then is the Mag.7Would you tell us? It is quite simply a podcast, produced and distributed by the association blésoise The Next Meeting. The principle is simple: in collaboration with libraries of Agglopolys In the town of Blois, the host Étienne invites people to walk through the music-cinema service and video games of the places and to choose DVDs there. More specifically, seven films, series, documentaries or concerts – seven corresponding to the borrowing capacity proposed by the library – then evoke their selection to the microphone. A monthly program based on the sharing and passion of the 7th art, and seeking to highlight the quality and quantity of films available in public libraries, all accessible for modest amounts, if not totally free in some communities.

Shining (1980)

Timecode 04: 10

Title V : The Shining Nationality : United States, Great Britain – Gender : Horror, Thriller, Fantastic – Director : Stanley Kubrick – Distribution : Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson...

DVD Edition France | Warner Bros. | 05 December 2007 - Blu-ray Edition France | Warner Bros. | 25 April 2018 - 4K Ultra HD Edition France | Warner Bros. | 1 May 2020 test) – Dissemination platforms : Max, Canal VOD, LaCinetek and ARTE Boutique

The pitch: The nightmare of a family forced to live alone in a hotel for a whole winter, the places being possessed by a terrible presence...

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : While he gradually plunges us into absolute terror, this classic of horror to brilliant construction, sophisticated staging and heavy atmosphere, was made unforgettable by the frightening performance of a Jack Nicholson inhabited by dementia. A work as fascinating as it is striking, even so far from the essence of Stephen King's novel.

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Alexandra) : Discovering a Stanley Kubrick movie, even when you're not a big fan, it's always a cinematic event. Especially when it comes to Shining. The horror is roundly led by psychology and the atmosphere. The hotel is alive and Jack Nicholson's madness transcribes domestic/intrafamilial violence and toxic masculinity. What's scarier than this horror of everyday life?

Lady Vengeance (2005)

Timecode 07: 08

Title V: (Chinjeolhan geumjassi) – Nationality: South Korea – Type: Drama, Thriller – Director : Park Chan-wook – Distribution : Lee Yeong-ae, Choi Min-sik, Kim Shi-hoo, Kwon Yea-young, Go Su-hee...

DVD editing: France | HK Video | 11 April 2018 - Blu-ray Edition France | Metropolitan Video | 06 December 2024 - 4K Ultra HD Edition France | Metropolitan Video | 11 October 2024 (the German edition test) – Dissemination platforms: Canal VOD, UniverseCine and Orange

The pitch: Sent to prison for the abduction and murder of a child she did not commit, a young woman will devote her 13 years of confinement to the meticulous preparation of her revenge towards the real culprit...

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : Sublime tragedy in search of a lost humanity, this last part of the Trilogy of vengeance to the ever-renewed emotional power and baroque staging, wants to atone for his sins once the angel of anger has passed! Ultimately, redemption cannot be achieved by a personal vendetta.

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Étienne) : Lady Vengeance is the third part of the trilogy of Park Chan-wook revenge after Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Old Boy. After brutal and visceral revenge in the first two opus, we see here a meticulous setting up of operations. The film demonstrates an incredible achievement of mastery and a color management that beautifully accompanies the humanisation of the characters. It is the most soothing of trilogy but certainly not the least cruel.

Let me in (2010)

Timecode 15: 25

Title V: Let Me In – Nationality: United States, Great Britain – Type: Drama, Horror, Fantastic – Director : Matt Reeves – Distribution : Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloë Grace Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Elias Koteas, Cara Buono...

DVD editing: France | Metropolitan Video | 08 February 2011 - Blu-ray Edition France | Metropolitan Video | 08 February 2011 - Dissemination platforms: CanalVOD, Cinemasalademande and Orange

The pitch: A young boy, marginal and martyred, takes on friendship for his new neighbor whom he finds so different from other people. While his arrival coincides with a murder series, the boy understands that the girl is none other than a vampire...

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : From a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, this macabre tale, set in an atmosphere as icy as it is poetic and elegantly directed, tells through the eyes of a young boy a beautiful story of bloody love, but finally touching, of great purity. In Hollywood, this successful remake of the Swedish film Morse is one of the best vampiric variations in recent years.

Opinion of The Next Meeting  (Seb) : Like the Psycho by Gus Van Sant, this film questions the interest of making a remake far too faithful to the original work. And especially when this one, Morse, already proves to be an undeniable mastery. But in the case of Let me in., this allowed director Matt Reeves to confirm the essay Cloverfield in terms of know-how and staging, delivering a work as dark as it is poetic.

In the terrible jungle (2019)

Timecode 20: 19

Nationality: France – Type: Documentary – Directors : Caroline Capelle and Ombline Ley – Distribution : Ophélie Lefebvre, Léa Lenoir...

DVD editing: France | ESC Editions | 20 August 2019 - Dissemination platforms: VIVA, Tënk and PremièreMAX

The pitch: In a medico-educational institute, a dozen unsolicited, frank and spontaneous teenagers lend themselves to the game of cinema and staging, transforming the center into an outland...

Men (2022)

Timecode 26: 39

Nationality : Great Britain – Type: Horror, Thriller, Fantastic – Director : Alex Garland – Distribution : Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, Gayle Rankin, Sarah Twimey...

DVD editing: France | Metropolitan Video | 21 October 2022 - Blu-ray Edition France | Metropolitan Video | 21 October 2022 - 4K Ultra HD Edition Germany | Koch Media | 27 October 2022 - Dissemination platforms: Canal VOD, UniverseCine and Orange

The pitch: Following a terrible event, a young woman decided to segregate in the English countryside. But on the spot, she's going to feel a strange presence that's never stopped spying and following her...

Opinion of MaG (KillerS7ven) : The image of the forbidden fruit and the guilt of the one who welcomed the apple upon arrival in the property, Men is not always subtle and uses sometimes artificial strings. It is all the more regrettable that the creation and the play of actors are not in default for a single moment. However, Men remains a film with interesting ideas but which would probably have won to choose a more powerful format to better reveal its critique of a society still widely trusted by men. (full criticism)

Opinion of The Next Meeting  (Seb) : Despite an end falling into the guignolesque, Men is a horrific troller that manages to transcribe the hell experienced by women in a Malaysian patriarchal society. A real nightmare, which owes much to its heavy paranoid atmosphere and the accuracy of its actors, including a disturbing Rory Kinnear. Perhaps not the most subtle film by Alex Garland (Ex machina, Annihilation, Civil War), but no doubt one of its most striking.

The Taste of Tea (2003)

Timecode 32: 04

Title V (Cha no aji) - Nationality: Japan – Type: Comedy, Drama – Director : Katsuhito Ishii – Distribution: Takahiro Sato, Maya Banno, Tadanobu Asano, Anna Tsuchiya, Satomi Tezuka...

DVD editing: France | CTV International | 09 November 2005 - Blu-ray Edition France | Spectrum Films | 28 April 2022 - Dissemination platform: LaCinetek

The pitch: The hazards and miseries of a Japanese family living in a small mountain town near Tokyo...

Angel Heart - At the gates of hell (1987)

Timecode 37: 47

Title V: Angel Heart – Nationality: United States, Great Britain, Canada – Gender : Thriller, Horror, Fantastic – Director : Alan Parker – Distribution: Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, Lisa Bonet, Charlotte Rampling, Brownie McGhee...

DVD editing: France | Studiochannel | 1 April 2021 - Blu-ray Edition France | Studiochannel | 1 April 2021 - 4K Ultra HD Edition : FRance | Studiochannel | 1 March 2023 (the test) – Dissemination platforms: Canal+, VIVA and LaCinetek

The pitch: Investigating the mysterious disappearance of an ancient crooner, a private detective will see his investigation carry him to the mystical lands of New Orleans, sowing despite him death in his passage...

Opinion of MaG (Celeste wolf) : At the crossroads of the polar and the fantastic, this black film with a disturbing aura and a moist atmosphere is carried by a cast of legend (Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, Charlotte Rampling) which, in the garden of evil, finds itself faced with an obscure narrative puzzle with (or not) memorable dream scenes. Unclassifiable and deeply strange, this Faust voodoo sauce today only suffers from its rare but clearly outdated SFX. Searching memory is finding the Devil!

Opinion of The Next Meeting (Étienne)  : If you are looking for a peaty thriller with a 50's detective movie atmosphere, which starts in a glacial New York covered with melted snow (and peaper) then extends into a warm, humid (and peaper) Louisiana looking for a missing crooner, all sprinkled with black magic, then Angel Heart is for you! And then there's Mickey Rourke at the top of his art... A classic of his time that didn't take a ride.
