WORK – Léonidas pushes the song

In the 19th century, in the fascists of the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera, Christine, a star soprano, is at the top of her glory. Her success is due to her golden voice and the mysterious advice she receives from a « Angel », a ghost living in the undergrounds of the building. Man, a disfigured musical genius who lives reclusive and haunting opera, loves the girl with absolute and exclusive love. When Raoul enters Christine's life, the Ghost can't stand him...

Follement kitsch and grandiose, this flamboyant musical adapted from Broadway's show is carried by a certain romanesque momentum where sublime decorum and moving music (dialogues are sung) share the poster for nearly 140 monstrously memorable minutes. But if the second roles (Minnie Driver in the lead) and the young Emily Rossum (while sensitive) have the flame, the rest of the casting is unconvincing (Patrick Wilson lacks fit in the skin of the fiery Raoul).

IMAGE – Goth, you want some!

Once it's not customary, I only bought the Ultra HD 4K disc and not the full edition which is out of price. As a result, I will not be able to tackle the game of comparisons even if certain defects and/or limitations have clearly come to light.

If the colors are rich and deep (the trimmings and other gildings are sumptuous), I was surprised by the softness of the images (even if there are many details) while the visuals remain luxuriant. Undoubtedly, this is a simple upscal of HD transfer where WCG and HDR technologies have been applied with varying degrees of success.

In fact, while the light sources are globally resplendent (especially in the large hall of the opera where the reflections on marble surfaces are fantastic), the flesh tones are sometimes strange (yellow at the masked ball) and some lights squarely fake so they detach themselves from the rest of the plane. As for contrasts, they are in the vast majority of superb cases (except a handful of plans) and thus highlight the dark and humid undergrounds of the places.

SONG – Sing my Angel

Back in HD after its fast transition to HD-DVD (a Dolby Digital 5.1 blend on the Blu-ray), the soundtrack presented here is solid.

The dynamics fly away during the sung passages and during the enlivened scenes, the musical sequences are particularly wide with voices that sound remarkably well (cf. the theme of the Ghost), the surround scene regularly adds an additional dimension to the acoustic space (especially during the final climax) and the bass roam with always appropriate depth.

However, I regret the absence of VF. Why would you tell me? Because the doublers (in songs) are more talented than the actors (especially about Gerard Butler)!

CONCLUSION – A mask, voices, passion

♫ Night in my sleep
Slides a disc
His voice bursts in me
His voice's in me.
Would it be a dream again?
But this time
I know the Phantom of the Opera is here.
In me ♩

The Opera Ghost (2004)

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
