WORK - Living a grief

London. Traumatized by the accidental death of her daughter Kate, Julia is staying in a psychiatric clinic. When she leaves, she moves into an old Victorian house. The place is soon the scene of strange demonstrations. Would it be Kate, as Julia feeds hope?

Adapted from a novel by Peter Straub and interpreted by grace Mia Farrow (nine years later) Rosemary), this human drama on an impossible mourning mixes psychoanalysis and supernatural (a « ghost story » To better draw the portrait of a mother bereaved than the silent beauty of the nimble plans of melancholy. But in view of its (real) subject, this misestimated classic of the fantastic cinema of the 70s could have dispensed with the death scenes.

Are you there?

Carefully restored in 4K from the original negative 35 mm by Silver Salt Restoration, this ouated image validated by the director Richard Loncraine and the leader op Peter Hannan is fascinating in UHD Dolby Vision.

The scan has no damage or instability, the silvery characteristics of the photograph are preserved with a fine granular layer (a little more pronounced sometimes) and the level of detail, very homogeneous over time, does not suffer from any digital manipulation (the Victorian home has not been republished) and therefore retains its sweetness d « sharpness » to the over-yearly beauty.

The reproduction of autumn colours is now more « Bold » (including misty blues and vegetal green) with better represented brown shades and a more dewy carnation, the extended contrast rate with careful accords perfectly with the atmosphere of the sequences (blacks being, for example, less deep when the glare « fantastic » the supernatural haunts the places) and the light sources, diffuse and vaporous, have been discreetly raised to suavity press their authenticity.

The Infernal Circle (1977)

Don't be afraid!

Two monophonic soundtracks where the sobriety of the effects and the delicacy of the score (entering) of Colin Towns are as wide as clear. Nevertheless, the voice rendering is dated in VO (slightly deaf and distant) as in VF (too acute and detached).

For more precision (the atmospheres « silent ») and naturally (dialogues), the VO is to be given priority over its French-speaking friend whose breath is audible and aggressive.

CONCLUSION - Difficult reconstruction

Repositioning in a three-folded digipack in a cardboard sheath with a beautiful visual, this horrific slow-burning drama, somewhat forgotten since its previous and revolting video-based releases (the DVD had a horrible master VHS), can finally show itself in its best light (a fantastic A/V performance) with this edition limited to 1000 copies rich in exciting bonuses.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
