WORK – The Fantastic Monster League
Although she has been conscientiously buried in a tomb at the bottom of an unfathomable desert, a princess from ancient Egypt, whose fate has been unjustly delighted to her, returns to life and will pour centuries of grudge and terror beyond human understanding into our world...
From the sands of the Middle East to the cobblestones of London, this new version haunted by a Tom Cruise and one Sofia Boutella ferociously sexy mixes spectacular action scenes and gently horrific adventure without succeeding in dusting the myth. The fault of an invading multiverse (the Dark Universe) and a borderlic intrigue, that the high-tech special effects and unusual self-deteriority of his star cannot bury. Fun but disappointing!
IMAGE – Out of the sarcophagus
Mostly captured in 35 mm silver format, these images of character (the grain is there but finer than on the Blu-ray) move away from a clinical rendering to move into a visceral atmosphere. Whether we like this granular aspect or not, it is difficult to deny the stability of the definition, the fineness of the pique, the precision of the details, the flawless restitution of the colors and the brilliance of the contrasts proposed by this remarkable UHD transfer even if undemonstrative.
The shadows and darkness of the undergrounds and other catacombs are less unfathomable than on the HD transfer for a more accurate misty appearance, the lights (the sun, the lamps and the flames) gain in shine, and the gradation of the colorimetric palette is improved with a gain in shade (the earthy hues) and vibrance (the grey-blue tones) far from being derisory.
SON – The legend tells...
Massive Atmos tracks (the VO even more since the VF is encapsulated on Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 and not Dolby TrueHD 7.1) and animated that regularly use all channels at their disposal to shake us effectively.
From the beautiful holding of voices to the incessant activity of the rear scene (the bullets in Iraq), to the authority of the dynamics and the balance of air support (sandstorm, plane crash, etc.), the result is absolutely immersive and mercilessly effective.
CONCLUSION – Should she be raised?
While this generic blockbuster has precipitated the Dark Universe (then born) in the abyss, the present 4K Ultra HD avoids the «mummy-cid » with more fresher A/V services than Dr. Jekyll of Russell Crowe !
