WORK – A mouse and men
Paul Edgecomb, a centenary resident of a retirement home, is haunted by his memories. In 1935, as head guard of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary, he was responsible for ensuring that death sentences were carried out properly, trying to soften the final moments of the convicts. Among them was a colossus named John Coffey, accused of rape and murder of two girls. Intrigued by this candid and shy man, with magical gifts, Edgecomb will weave strong ties with him.
To plead against racism and the death penalty, this deeply humanistic supernatural drama is beautifully supported by a staging of timely classicism, actors inhabited by their characters and a scenario (adapted from Stephen King's eponymous work) poignant at finesse « Magic ». A very great moment of cinema!
IMAGE – On death row
More than a bad memory, the previous transfer 1080p encoded in VC-1 (the Blu-ray was released in 2009) is today « Grinded » by its counterpart UHD HDR10... The sublime photo of the Ops leader David Tattersall can thus find his letters of nobility.
We therefore find ourselves with a distinctly enhanced general sharpness, many details found (face features, inside cells, clothing texture), a more proportionate (too) light silver grain (a 35 mm capture) even if clearly lightened (moderate use of DNR), and the addition of WCG/HDR technologies whose benefits are no longer to be demonstrated.
In fact, the colorimetric palette, otherwise more nuanced (the carnation, finally natural, no longer suffers from any sunburn) attends the « release » of its primary (blue sky, green grass, red blood) that no longer have to be « Prisoners » of the former shade amber almost monochromatic.
And contrasts side is the day and night, since the scenes taking place in the dark take advantage of denser blacks and better readability, where the light sources become brighter (the lighting of the penitentiary center, the variation of light intensity of the bulbs, the reflections on brick walls).
SON – I'm tired boss
Guided by Thomas Newman's unforgettable music, this goldsmith soundtrack that listens to VO (even if properly spatialized, the small VF is terribly out of date) is gratified by a brand new Dolby Atmos mix.
Subtile, harmonious and even impressive when narration demands it (cf. the dreadful execution of Delacroix), it takes advantage of dialogues with exemplary clarity, energetic dynamics, effects/ambiences whose spatial position is remarkable (such as prison life in the surrounds and thunderstorms in the heights) and bass always suitable (the tremors of the House of the Moores) even if not present.
CONCLUSION – A miracle of God?
Only able to fully restore the poetic-mystic atmosphere that soaks up the place, the present 4K Ultra HD is a fine technically sound object that all the guards of The Green Line must possess!
