WORK – The saving demon is here!

The Hellboy demon is called to Earth during a dark ceremony celebrated by Grigori Rasputin and the Nazis, who want to use the infernal forces for conquest purposes. Adopted by Professor Broom, Hellboy was then raised to fight the forces of Evil. But 60 years later, resurrected by his disciples, Rasputine wishes « finish » work and plunge the Earth into infernal chaos...

This handcrafted blockbuster that successfully adapts the series of eponymous comics is a fantastic film with an attractive yet classic scenario, brilliant staging (a real technical know-how), atypical characters (Guillermo del Toro loves the « Freaks »), perfect casting, tasty dialogues and fun action scenes.

IMAGE – Life in Red

Apart from the TriStar logo that is not flattering for the retina (very soft, faded colors and excessive granularity), this UHD HDR10 transfer remains exceptional.

Captured in 35 mm, these nicely organic images far exceed those of the previous Blu-ray. The sharpness is incredible (the clarity of the environments), the much more perceptible details (the patterns on Hellboy's skin), the much wider and nuanced colorimetric palette (such as the reds and blues/greens that are deeper), the more robust and refined contrasts (more intense whites and firmer blacks) and the otherwise more intense light sources (projectors, lightning, interior lighting, reflections on the ground and metal objects).

SON – The devil's song

VO Dolby Atmos is as turbulent and impulsive as Hellboy.

With a monstrous dynamic and an ultra-wide sound scene (an out-of-standard spatialisation), this engaging soundtrack is unleashed and allows for huge effects and very immersive atmospheric atmospheres. Supported by unwavering surrounds, fully connected high channels (rain, thunder, flame advance, loudspeaker announcements) and monumental bass (explosions), it manages in all circumstances to maintain the intelligibility of voices and music (particularly large).

A little more compact (less open at the back) and packed (less energetic), the VF still holds the high dragage to the VO.

CONCLUSION – Escaped from hell...

Freely based on the series of the same name published by Dark Horse Comics, the Hellboy 2004 is a visually enchanting and wildly inventive adaptation where the struggle against the apocalypse must be experienced in 4K Ultra HD!

Hellboy (2004)

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
