- Grey, Dev's dreamy fable...
In some corners of the world of video game, there are jewels that, such as shrapnel, captivate the player's imagination and enchant the senses. Among these treasures is Grey, an enchanting creation by Spanish developers Nomada Studio, which while distinguished by its dazzling artistic reach, also challenges the player through its themes and the emotions that it arouses.
The Devolver Funamble
Before we dive into the visual and musical delights that make up GreyIt is important to pay tribute to the publisher who was able to make this trip possible: Devolver Digital. If this name resonates in the world of video game as the expression of benevolent eccentricity, their fantasy character has become their trademark. As a funambule overlooking the industry and evolving between conventions, Devolver Digital does not hesitate to challenge its limits, de facto embarking on unexplored paths to offer players unique and exciting experiences.
Ultraviolence from Sulphur Hotline Miami, to the terriblely fun tribute to the action films of the 80/90s that represents My Friend Pedro, Devolver's constant commitment to creativity and their ability to find innovative projects today make them bold in the video world. Therefore, by taking the step of artistic references that constitute Child of Light and Journey, while embracing a visual and musical aesthetic as elegant as timeless, Grey reinvents the contours of the interactive art work experience by offering an emotional journey of rare beauty.
In the first place, the singular visual paw of Grey is a real delight for the eyes, surprising the player because of its delicate precision. The scenery, like animated paintings, evokes the sweet melancholy of an awakened dream. Each environment is carefully designed, each color carefully chosen, thus creating an enchanting visual harmony. Through ethereal landscapes, evocative environments and heavy sense, the game takes us to a dream world where the border of the imagination comes up against the reality of feelings. The blurry contours and the delicate nuances that make up Grey are all brushes that sketch a poetic fresco, revealing an unexpected emotional depth.
Yet, not content to charm our gaze, Grey We also wrap with his musical embrace. The soundtrack, composed by the Spanish artist Berlinist, unfolds with grace and subtlety, accompanying each step of our protagonist, a mutic singer, in this introspective journey. The crystalline notes, in turn imprinted with melancholy and hope, accompany this initiatory journey to highlight its full emotional reach.
Music becomes the driving thread of this adventure, taking the player in an enchanting atmosphere. Thus, Grey is imposed as a work in its own right, exceeding the mere status of video game to rise to the rank of transcendental artistic expression. As in Child of Light and Journey cited earlier, he embodies the idea that video game can represent much more than just entertainment. It can then become a way for the player to explore the limits of the human soul, all in an introspective experience that will leave an indelible imprint in the heart and mind of those who will have the audacity to give up.
A contemplative game
Throughout his enigmatic and poetic quest, Grey invites us to explore the deepest emotions of our being. If I will not further develop the themes conveyed by the work of Nomada Studios in order to preserve its impact, the title manages to communicate a multitude of universal emotions without ever uttering a word, breaking the linguistic and cultural barriers to touch the player in a purely sensory way.
From the first moments, the player finds himself immersed in a desolate world, where the eponymous protagonist is without a voice. It is in this silence that a mysterious force awakens, such as an echo of its inner being that seeks to express itself. Every step, every jump, our singer experiences metamorphosis, transcending the limits of his old identity to reinvent and rebuild himself. If the gameplay loop of Grey is that of a simple platformer, asking the player to cross environments loaded with symbolism and solve delicate puzzles, each challenge overcome then opens new possibilities, thus revealing the latent abilities of the singer and new gameplay situations.
Hence, the player finds himself immersed in a real emotional and visual dance, where each movement is an expression of the inner transformation of our heroine. Thus, the gameplay of Grey is intrinsically linked to its aesthetic, whether visual or sound, creating a perfect symbiosis between the interaction of the player and the artistic expression of the work, weaving a harmonious canvas where the music reacts to the steps of Grey and the world to its movements. This delicate and graceful dance between the player and the work, where contemplation and exploration interlacing to create an immersive and resonant experience is also not without recalling the no less sublime Bound, title of Plastic Studios and Santa Monica, released in 2017 on PS4.
Therefore, by wandering through the oniric meanders of Grey, the player is invited to dive into an experience that if she does not tell herself, lives intensely. Whether you're looking for escape or a captivating sensory experience, I can only advise you to get carried away by Grey and thus discover a world where beauty and poetry meet to offer you an unforgettable journey. In the meantime Neva, from the same studio that then went well to transport us again.
Insatiable player on PC and Switch, I like to nibble at all rakes. Extreme hacker, I like to wait a few days after the release of a game to have the pleasure of installing a mod replacing Nemesis by Thomas the train or allowing Kratos to incarner with a mustache. Being unable to decide when to start a game, I leave the keys of my destiny to a virtual wheel that will choose a game at random.

Very beautiful criticism for a game with a sublime artistic direction and sound ambience, whose overcontemplative nature unfortunately displeased. I've already noticed this with other similar games in their form, like Journey For example, who always end up boring in the long run.
I really find it hard to ignore gameplay when I play. That said, with hindsight, maybe an ethereal gameplay better matches a symbolic game like Grey.
In any case the next game of the studio seems to adopt again a pretty graphic paw. We'll probably see him at Gamescom.
