Dr. Pretorius has just invented a machine that stimulates the pineal gland and opens a door to the beyond. During the experiment, a creature beheaded the professor. His assistant, Crawford, witness of the scene, is accused of murder and detained in a psychiatric hospital. His therapist, Katherine McMichaels, convinces the police to let Crawford try the experiment again...
Certainly a little old-fashioned today, this demonstrative series B of the 80s after Lovecraft (a news of seven pages) remains no less a spectacle of hell with delicious deviance (sexual but not that !) where unlikely bugs, eroticism more than underlying (enriched by the advantageous plastic of Barbara Crampton) and Craspec transformations (of which the Practical Effects are a creation of the legendary « Monster Man » Mark Shostrom) spark a nightmare awakened to growing madness. A classic movie bis... here proposed in its uncut version.
« It's just the body, but my mind is indivisible. »
Dr. Edward Pretorius
From a 4K scan of the original 35 mm negative (and from a 35 mm print that does not swear during R-Rated inserts), this UHD HDR10 transfer obtained from Vinegar Syndrome magnifies the visual ambition of acid photography Mac Ahlberg. It should be noted that for the purposes of the test, comparisons were made with the Blu-ray 1080p incorporated in this edition and not the 1080i disc released in 2014 (which I do not own).
The source is in perfect condition (no damage due to time or white dots), the silver grain is clearly better solved, the definition is more assertive (the pieces are clearer), the details become more complex (the facial characteristics, the roughness of the makeup, the textile fibres) and the compression HEVC is afraid of nothing (a bitrate regularly exceeding 100 Mb/s).

The criard colorimetric palette (and of course supernatural) bathed in pink, violet and blue hues benefits from a better saturation, the contrasts catch more by blacks at the increased depth (it's notable in the basement) and whites to the very other purity (medical coats), and the violent sources of lighting are displayed with a tenfold intensity (the ceiling lights of the attic lab, the glare on the gliding textures, the reflections on the glasses of Dr. Katherine McMichaels' glasses, the light emanating from the resonator, the headlights of the vehicles).
Wider than the VF Dual Mono (with coarse dubbing and overly crushed atmospheres), the original stereophonic VO to the active environments frontally diffuses voices with great clarity and score (signed Richard Band) a fidelity to any trial in which symphonic orchestra and atmospheric tablecloths copulate gracefully. In addition, the dynamics manifest themselves with subtlety and the bass invite themselves to the most monstrous encounters. A regret, however, about the absence of the new 5.1 mix on the American record.
Certainly less definitive than the excellent macabre comedy Re-Animator of the same Stuart Gordon, this horrific work where the transformations of the flesh inevitably accompany the psychic collapse of its protagonists, manages to mine nothing to connect to Lovecraft's disturbed spirit. And served in the form of a 48-page premium mediabook (a making-of written by Marc Toulelec), this 4K Ultra HD edition with A/V performances that excite senses and pleasant bonuses (three interviews and a documentary on special effects) will delight fans. When the flesh and mind mingle intimately, what can happen?
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
