What do you say about SF Cyprus? This is at least the promise ofEmbryo Larva Butterflysubmitted toGIFF (Geneva International Film Festival). So what's this European concept movie worth? Express response below...

Today, Mom died. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know...

In the world developed byKyros PapavassiliouYou never know when you're... In fact, every time you wake up, you find yourself in a « when » Different: 64 or 18? Divorced or not even married? Pregnant or not? Every time the eyelids take off, the same questioning. This is how Penelope and Isidoros live (Maria ApostolakeaandHristos Sougaris), the two main protagonists of thisEmbryo Larva Butterfly. A dared bet for the Cypriot director who is not at his trial. He has already made several shorts, serial episodes and a dramatic feature film already borrowed from similar themes,Oi entyposeis enos pnigmenou(you are left to pronounce the title). What, then, does he manage to deliver us with this new realization?

« Oi entyposeis enos pnigmenou » (2015), by the same director

So he attacks the SF film that explores the notion of time with a small budget, and it's definitely not the first... However, it must be noted that at first glanceEmbryo Larva ButterflyConvincing. Between his calendar telling the spectator the « when » from the following scene, a clean staging and several pretty staging ideas, Papavassiliou advanced some masculine arguments. Some scenes were even able to mark the retinas (a sex scene in overprint, several parallel montages conducted roundly, etc.) and the very concept of the feature film intrigued without losing its spectator too much in unstoppable script tarabiscotages.

Cold

Yet, quickly, this object-concept gives way to the weakness of many films of this kind: the total coldness. We quickly understand that the feature film will abandon any attempt to make us feel something for its characters, focusing only on the development of its intrigue. The longer the session progresses, the more the film leaves us emotionally on the side, without getting to grips with its originality or narrative. The story itself will tend to get lost along the way, and despite several formal bursts,Embryo Larva Butterflywill never really catch us...

In short, a film that gave hope and shows the certain know-how of its author, but unfortunately completely underexploited. A beautiful universe, a pretty well executed idea, but too cold for thatEmbryo Larva ButterflyIt's a shame.

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
