WORK – (Re)Successful take-off
Holt Farrier, an ancient circus glory, saw his life completely jammed when the war returned. Max Medici, owner of a difficult capital, recruits him to take care of an elephant with disproportionate ears, which in a short time became the laugh of the public. But when Holt's children discover that this one can fly, the persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere and the aerial acrobate Colette Marchant come into play to make the young pachyderm a real star...
While remaining true to the Disney spirit, this modern version in real shots of the great classicDumbois as subversive (the attack in good standing against the XXL show industry – Disneyland!? – who eats small artisans of a human size) as personal (theod to the difference, the celebration of freedom). With poetry and a touch of naivety, this nostalgic learning story of a past world reinvents its characters (interpreted by a four-star casting) and benefits from an artistic direction with stunning beauty. By resurrecting this adorable flying elephant (truer than nature), Tim Burton has just reborn from his ashes! It must also be said that the world of the circus is wonderful for him...Big Fish.
IMAGE – The Magic of Cirque
The definition makes a leap forward (the backgrounds are clearer), the details are more attractive (the costumes and decors), the colorimetric palette with retro hues is richer, the contrasts are firmer (see the improvement of the blacks), and the light sources are definitely more precise (the interiors weakly lit) and flamboyant (the sunlight and the lights in Dreamland).
SON – Feeling growing wings
« Disabled » by filtered bass (and it's the same thing on the Blu-ray's DTS-HD MA 7.1 track) while many passages could have pushed the subwoofer into its entrenchments (starting with the heavy step of the elephants), this yet impeccable spatialization soundtrack requires to adjust the volume to a higher level, a habit at Disney, to take full advantage of it.
The musical dynamic (the score is signed Danny Elfman) is enterprising, the effects/ambiences realistic, the generous backstage and the restitution of dialogues of great clarity.
The VO Dolby Atmos nevertheless takes precedence over the artistically successful VF thanks to a more extensive wrap (the use of height channels during circus numbers) and an increased musical presence.
CONCLUSION – An elephant is a huge mistake?
If he didn't dare to throw himself in the water in Blu-ray, it's in 4K Ultra HD thatDumboGet out of here!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
