Work - Bad Santa will punish you
Billy and Ricky attended the murder of their parents by a runaway criminal disguised as Santa Claus. As an adult, Billy must one day wear a Santa Claus costume. The traumas of the past suddenly reappear...
As a cult and controversial in the United States, this friendly slasher of the 80s misleads the image of Santa Claus to better attack American Puritanism. And while she takes it joyfully and not without cynicism « big ideas » Puritans through the prism of a killer with (re)creative murders, this B series that has more than one turn in its hood delivers the merchandise at the foot of the tree. Be careful, it'll cut!
IMAGE - Christmas Garlands and Boobs
Even if drawn from the same master's degree as that operated in 2017 by the American publisher Shout! Factory (a 4K scan of the original 35 mm negative restored in HD), this 1080p transfer that preserves the organic aspect of the capture is damaged by a regularly hazardous compression (artifacts and tingling).
And that's a shame, since outside of questionable cleanliness (dust and white dots multiply), images enjoy a very good definition (cf. Gore faces and riggings), balanced contrasts (details do not fade into darkness or light) and a colorimetric palette (where reds and greens predominate) to controlled saturation.
The inserts of the uncensored version (an additional time of just over 2 minutes) come from a VHS version of the film (an SD source of the coup). So don't be surprised if the quality drops drastically from there.
SON - Chatimeeeeent!
Proposed in 2.0 surrounds (a very slight escape to the rear), the very frontal VO is busy with rather brutal effects (physical violence, screams) and shows a noticeable clarity. The music is as apprehensive as it should be, the voices are as sharp as they are well positioned and the dynamics are rather honourable.
The VF dual mono (restricted to the cinema version) is more brittle than its conœur and is tested by a dubbing that is too salient to interfere with the original mixing (the atmosphere suffers from it).
CONCLUSION - Have you been wise this year?
Finally available in HD in France and above all, in its uncensored version, this series B that kills the magic of Christmas enriches the Angoisse Collection by Rimini Éditions in a collector edition (a superb digipack with three shutters slipped in a case) 2 DVD + Blu-ray (generally sharp A/V performances) accompanied by its traditional booklet of 24 pages (on the genesis of the film) written by Marc Toulelec. In short, the ideal gift for the slashers!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
