WORK – Alice in Victoryland

The chronicle of an isolated community in the Californian desert in the middle of the 1950s, in which a woman sees her life being chambouled.

Retro in her licked aesthetic (the SF of the 1950s) but modern in her openly corrosive speech (patriarchal oppression), this psychological thriller with feminist accents combinesAlice in WonderlandandThe Truman Showto better wrap her bleak and elegant suspense. And while it is true that the narrative lacks finesse, this dystopic fable with quite remarkable ambition remains no less exciting, especially in the face of two talents to follow closely: Olivia Wilde for her flamboyant staging and Florence Pugh for her striking interpretation.

IMAGE – Too good to be true

To be able to reproduce carefully the look perfect of the mid-19th century, this UHD HDR10 transfer (from a real DI 4K) brings noticeable improvements to the already graceful images of her counterpart 1080p SDR.

The increase in resolution is noticeable on close-up (faces, clothes) and wide plans (indoor decorations, urban furniture) thanks to more refined details, the colour palette « candy » appears as warmer (the places seem more welcoming) and displays more attractive primaries (green lawns, blue sky, Bunny's lipstick), contrasts are given a better hold (blacks at natural depth and whites at immaculate purity), the light sources have a sharp shine (the overwhelming light of the desert, the reflections on the bodywork, artificial lighting of the evening organized by Frank, the surgical scialytics) without denatured the darkest of them (notably in a slender apartment), and no compressive artifacts have been invited to participate in this confidential project.

SON – The horrors of love

Showing a lot of creativity at the back, this soundtrack with striking effects/ambiences of realism (the noises of the house like water that ends in the kitchen) and anxiogenic musical score was firmly designed.

The dynamic becomes aware of its existence during the key moments (the first contact with the headquarters), the voices are of great clarity, the spatialisation which is far from being as restricted as its (false) subject might let it fear is particularly precise, the bass deeply support the rise of tension and the score is endowed with crazy intensity.

And for more sensations, without even mentioning its increased scale, the VO encoded in Dolby Atmos (against a Dolby Digital 5.1 pötit for VFF) allows environments (and a plane) to rise.

CONCLUSION – An almost perfect lie

Deprived of free will, a wife of the 50s nuclear family will gradually discover an unhealthy truth by venturing on a frightening and dangerous terrain, which the present 4K Ultra HD, technically worthy of praise, reveals in all its suffocating beauty!

Don't Worry Darling

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
