WORK - Dead or alive?

As soon as a serious fall is over, Dominique Ballard, wife of a wealthy businessman, begins to be a victim of strange and fearful visions. Is she losing her mind? Is she a victim of a machination? Is the couple's home really haunted?

Based on a news from Harold Lawlor, this thriller « supernatural » macabre with disturbing atmosphere and many twists evokes just as much the Hammer cinema Dario Argento. The staging of Michael Anderson is of course classic but solid, the scenario even if doing in the pre-vision holds in breath and the performances of Cliff Robertson (Luncle Ben in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man) and Jean Simmons enough to give cold back. Obviously dated, this work with certain charm remains no less representative of some fantastic English (starting with Amicus productions) today disappeared.

IMAGE - All colors of Giallo

Not resulting from the 2K restoration operated by the US publisher Vinegar Syndrome in its 2019 Blu-ray edition (or then there is a coumac !), this HD transfer to the dated aspect seems rather derived from an interpositive. The 35mm silver patina is either attenuated by an abusive use of DNR (including waxy faces) or sounded (the encoding is rather naughty), the pique lacks cruelly sharp (the textures are devoid of relief to a handful of planes) and it happens to the contrasts to be unfortunately to the penalty (blacks sometimes washed up sometimes blocked).

This is a pity since the image is stable, almost completely cleaned (two stripes, a cigarette burn and some dust) and respectful of the (really beautiful) gothic-bigarrated colorimetric palette of the director of photography Ted Moore... Especially when the « spectrum » where it very openly suggests the Italian productions of the 60s and 70s with its green, purple, red, pink and blue hues.

SON - A piano in the night

Despite a (light) persistent breath and sometimes stifled dialogues, the monophonic VO is sufficiently powerful and properly mixed with a well-open score and additional noises (most often related to « Fantastic events ») carefully studied.

Very similar if this is the presence of two or three strangely enhanced effects, the incomplete VF (comprehensive version) also presented in DTS-HD MA 2.0 (dual mono) benefits from its good dubbing since the voices are broadcast there with more clarity.

CONCLUSION - This is taken who thought it took!

Having not stolen his place within the Angoisse collection of Rimini Editions, Dominique is Dead (of his original title) rests like his congeners in a superb three-folded digipack, slipped into a cardboard sheath with a visual of a very relevant period. And despite the absence of supplements on the discs (Blu-ray + DVD), the 24-page booklet that Marc Toulelec owes (again) goes back to the producer's career Milton Subotsky. Still, better A/V performances would no doubt have made the home-cinema session more enjoyable.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
