WORK – The Ballad of the Lonesome Van Damme

Devastated by social anarchy and plague, 21st century America is plunged into a barbaric nightmare. Only a cyborg, Pearl Prophet, has the knowledge to develop a vaccine. But Pearl is captured by cannibal pirates who want to keep the antidote for them and dominate the Earth! Only the fighting talents of Gibson Richenbaker can save her and with her, the rest of civilization...

Thanks to its nervousness, its dark and dangerous atmosphere, its violent fighting, its gallery of villains, its quality score and its iconic staging, this post-apocalyptic film broke (the scenery is empty), kitsch (the costumes), misinterpreted (JCVD is saved by its charisma) and the script devoid of depth is now considered one of the best sub-Mad Max (crossed with Ken the survivor).

Extremely cult and effective without being a real good film (!), here is a western post-apo with the sweet smell of B series where nostalgia works at full speed... It must also be said that, visibly passionate about genre, the director was able to make the most of the tiny budget allocated.

IMAGE – But what Cannon !

Stable and neat, this beautiful HD lift should delight the fans of the work.

With a nice cleanliness (except for a few stains and/or dusts), it leaves plenty of details (despite sometimes soft shots), the original little grain (DRN to absent subscribers), resurrected colors, solid contrasts and impressive blacks. A rediscovery!

SON – Pow, pow, pow, Arghhhhh, Pow!

As the comic trio said The Unknown in the sketch The Miseroids : « A THX sound Dolby System Quadriphony Digital Laser... of never heard! ». But in fact, not quite...

For whatever soundtrack is chosen, the mixing is now dated (cf. the sound of the blows made... Which have passed to posterity since then) and leaves to be desired by its lack of robustness (the shots are wasteful). But let's not squander our pleasure because she has no breath (unlike the OV of the Blu-ray US released in October 2012), delivers dialogues (but also screams and grunts) of great clarity and benefits from Kevin Bassinson's always as stubborn music.

Monophonic, the VF does not breathe as well as its sister (the latter being very open to the front) and chokes many atmospheres.

CONCLUSION – Without fear and blame the knight?

Regressive pleasure for the kisses and children of the videoclubs (whose vintage edition, unfortunately exhausted, had to titillate the nostalgic fiber), the madeleine of Proust a little bit « cheap » but applied what is Cyborg We arrive on Blu-ray support which, in contrast to the dilapidated world that it presents, has a most disconcerting A/V quality (in the right sense of the term) and delivers an amazing interactivity... Starting with Slinger, the VHS quality working copy of the Directors Cut (83 min – VOST DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono), less rhythmic and much more melancholy than the known version of all.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
