WORK – Farewell ghosts, hello devil!
As they begin to fight to protect the soul of a little boy, Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, switch into a radically unknown world that will shake them. This will be the first time in the history of the United States that a man suspected of murder pleads demonic possession as a line of defense.
If he renews the franchise by investigating a case of murderous possession instead of a haunted house, this eighth opus of the Conjuring-verse (Counseling, Annabelle, etc.) led by the solid duo Farmiga/Wilson unfortunately lets itself go to some coarse strings and other easy jump scares. But in the end, it's not very serious because the staging is elegant, the heavy atmosphere and the Arne Johnson case, terrifying when you think about it, really catchy.
IMAGE – The devil hides in the details
Clinical and non-paining, the images (shadows) delivered by this UHD HDR10 transfer are of great firmness.
Immaculated at all times, they benefit from a slightly sharper pitch than in HD (the close-ups on the faces, the backgrounds in the background), a more nuanced colorimetric palette (with brown shades) where the colors come out better during the weakly lit sequences, reinforced contrasts thanks to richer blacks (see underground tunnels) and livened whites, and more intense light sources even if deliberately sifted.
SON – Objection your Horror!
Marked by an abysmal dynamic that comes up at the slightest opportunity, this dreadful Dolby Atmos soundtrack does not want to be reassuring!
Immersive in devil and « rocked » by a disturbing score (signed Joseph Bishara), she takes possession of all the channels allocated to her to swing scary effects/ambiences straight out of hell. The dialogues are clear, the spatialization completely liberated, the scene of very active height (vent pester, rales beyond) when exorcisms are represented and the bass dark.
So much less slender and unnatural (dubbing), the accented VFQ is much too folded on itself.
CONCLUSION – Mediating evil?
Coming from Warren's files, this terrifying thriller is the victim of an even more egregious presence in 4K Ultra HD!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia

Ah, I'll look at this one: I've always had a weakness for Warren files. 🙂 And who says autumn coming says "horror movies"!
Halloween and Cie yes. 😉
