WORK – Buddha likes hell
After killing all the residents of the Shaolin Temple, the Red Lotus sect is looking for the last disciples. Fong Sai-Yuk, one of the most prestigious, is locked in the Temple of the Red Lotus, a demonic labyrinth led by a bloodthirsty madman, from whom no one came out alive. For now...
Produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Ringo Lam, this wu xia pian « stuck » in the depths of an impeccable sanctuary and desecrations full of traps, summons a national hero to help him get out. And as the places, which worship the gothic horror, are populated by a riddle of sborrows of the sect of the Red Lotus, it is to a plethora of duels (externally cut) that he will have to give himself not without a certain nervousness; until by fire purify this infernal cloth, « stained » a point of comedy (by the way rejoicing), imbued with blood!
IMAGE – In the arena of death
Despite the presence of a bit of dedge enhancement (some plans are harder than they should be), a slight video noise (in some of the darkest corners of the caves) and a handful of dust, this excellent HD transfer (supported by an overall robust encoding) performs a massive upgrade to the DVD released 20 years ago at the HK Video.
Natural in almost 95% of cases, the image shown here shows a solid definition, a sustained level of detail (close-up is superb), a colorimetric palette (resulting from a new calibration) as coherent as it is seedy (cf. reds), and a very good contrast rate; The blacks of a beautiful accuracy and the bright whites without excess can only support my sayings.
SON – Noise and fury
Both encoded in monophonic DTS-HD MA 2.0, these soundtracks as clean one as the other do not sound the same... And once it's not customary, it's the VF that wins!
Undermixed and deafer, the VO lacks punch where its consœur is otherwise more voluminous and energetic. In fact, effects (including blows) like the score have much more room to express. But more clearly, the (very good) French dubbing is less well integrated than Cantonese dialogues; regularly whispered (while they are never whispered in Molière's language) that said.
CONCLUSION – Inside the temple of Ringo and Tsui
Letting express all the bubbling of two filmmakers of the former colonia at the dawn of the retrocession, this major work of the cinema HK of the 90s sees its senses ignited by the present Blu-ray (resulting from a magnificent 2K master)!
