WORK - Mother Courage
To save her family from the plow of farmer Fitzgibbon, a nice mouse mom decides to move heaven and earth. On the way, she gets the help of a crow in bad love, a nearby mouse and a great fearful owl. Unfortunately, Mrs. Brisby would need a mechanical miracle to move his house...
Great classic of old school cartoon that marked the emancipation of animation genius Don Bluth, this pastoral tale with magnificent visuals of heroic fantasy distills adult themes with intelligence (such as widowhood, disease, pharmaceutical tests on animals and malhousement) in the prodigious quest of a small mouse full of bravery at the limits of danger. Almost forty years after his release, magic still works.
« - So he's gonna die? - No, honey, he's very sick. - What did he say, Mom? - Mr. Ages calls it pneumonia. Pneumonia? But when will he heal? - Soon I hope. »
IMAGE - Under the field
By correcting the dreadful master HD (with trembling images, multiple dirt, bleached colours and snowy tingling) exploited during the release of the 2011 Blu-ray, the modifications made by the publisher give a real young blow to Brisby's odyssey even if the silver texture (a 16 and 35 mm capture) inevitably suffers from it by using automated cleaning. But in the absence of a new 2K restoration (and why not 4K), this result is already unexpected!
The defects of the film have been removed to a few dusts, the stability has been reviewed, the twinkles are of ancient history and the compression is solid with an average flow of 29.8 Mbit/s. As for the colorimetric palette, it has been redesigned to achieve a flamboyant saturation (primarys are bright) with finally perceptible gradients. And if the softness of several planes as well as the thickness of the lines in the background persist (don't forget that the master is dated), the details will show with a very appreciable precision.
Although bright and globally balanced, contrast management is not the highlight of this edition, as it is limited in high luminances (sighting is perceived) and darkness (blacks draw a little towards grey). Nothing bad, don't worry.
SOUND - For the love of a child 🎶
Harmonious and with a certain warmth, the original 2.0 surround version is particularly pleasant to listen to. The dynamics are afraid of nothing, the dialogues are clear, the spatialization even though essentially frontal lets vagabond various sounds behind and the unforgettable score of Jerry Goldsmith is not lacking in scope.
Suffocated and otherwise less round than his conœur, the French track 2.0 dual mono (so necessarily more tightened) to the formidable dubbing of origin unfortunately puts him too much forward to the detriment of music and effects. Throughout, there is a slight shift.
Whether you choose one or the other, cleanliness and stability are without any distortion.
CONCLUSION - Nothing can stop it
PThis timeless little wonder of cartoon is adorned with a Blu-ray edition that is finally worthy of its stature. The digipack is superb, the exciting bonus section (an unreleased 50 min. make-of and a 26 min. interview of the animation cinema specialty) Xavier Kawa-Topor) and unexpected A/V benefits. Take your faggots off!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
