WORK – A monster with multiple shapes

A school teacher discovers that one of her students is victimized by her father and brother who cultivate a supernatural secret.

True classic in its construction but endowed with an unhealthy atmosphere, unsavory sequences and elegant staging, this macabre tale produced by Guillermo del Toro looks successfully at social horror (incest, family violence) before sinking into a gallery where the fantastic craspec (inspired by Amerindian legends) has taken up residence.

IMAGE – The morosity of Oregon

A solid HD transfer that remains stable (within two or three planes) despite the ambient darkness (proposal to raise anxiety), mist and rain.

Beautifully piqued and very well contrasted, the image reveals deliberately tristoon colours (even if the interiors draw towards orange), abyssal blacks and lighting « tired » Very timely.

SOUND – Silent suffering

Nuanced and immersive, the soundtrack encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1 is disturbing. Very detailed in the placement of its atmospheres (often distributed at the back) and striking in the diffusion of its effects (dynamics is afraid of nothing), it takes advantage of heavy low frequencies to accentuate the surrounding terror.

Less wide and more reserved, the VFF remains no less efficient with an established surround presence and clear voices.

CONCLUSION – Who's got the slab?

More than an umpteenth monster movie, Starved (Antlers in VO) chamboules the codes of the genre in order to better hatch a certain social reality... Even more terrible in Blu-ray!

Starved (2021)

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
