As Flint Westwood said so well in It was five times in the eastThe world is divided into two categories: those that point and click, and others. Imagine now that one transcends this blessed genre of video game by intertwining the influences of the pulp and cosmic horror, a bit like the magazine Weird Tales The most delusional writings of H. P. Lovecraft. After the excellent Nightmare Frames and An English Haunting, that's exactly what the independent Postmodern Adventures studio did, which goes so far as to call their latest-born, well-named pulp & click The Dark Rites of Arkham.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn

The Dark Rites of Arkham Puts us in the pixel of Detective Jack Foster, haunted by a recent trauma and in charge of an investigation that fell on him a little by chance: a macabre ritual murder took place in a locked apartment of a muddy building. A move, moreover, that no one could have come in or out without being seen. One thing by dragging another and in a delicious pirouette that would not have denied Inspector HarryOur disillusioned anti-hero will find himself forced to team up with his new partner and sect expert, Harvey Whitman. Foster and Whitman, whose characters are at the opposite sides of each other, will then work together to solve the glauquissimistic mysteries of Arkham, a city economically consumed by the Great Depression, moreover in the complicated historical context of Prohibition.

As always, the developers of Postmodern Adventures gratify us with a sublime artistic direction in pixel art.

Punctuated with twists and strong sequences worthy of any respectable comics pulp, the story held in suspense until the last scene, despite perhaps a somewhat abrupt final. For the rest, fans of ‘n click points will be filled, with puzzles just what it takes to give satisfaction at their resolution. One never blocks too long and in this case it is a good thing, because it allows one to be carried by the rhythm of the narrative or to give up to our imagination when reading the many descriptions of elements of the decor. The latter are always driven by the funny remarks and thoughts of our detective, for a game that does not lack humor.

The game does not hesitate to energize the ever-changing horizontal scrolling and to vary the points of view by means of close chest plans of the most beautiful effect.

It's often creepy and always mysterious, but the title is never taken seriously and it's so much better! We feel that the solo developer José María Meléndez was bottled at the Weird Tales, Tales From The Crypt, Crime SuspenStories etc. If there is a kind of video game that gives the impression of knowing a little personally its creator when unfolding the credits, this is the point ‘n click. Also noteworthy is the success of the sometimes jazzy, sometimes disturbing soundtrack composed by Matías J. Olmedo, which was already at work on An English Haunting.

Anchored in the political context of assumed xenophobia and the crisis of capitalism of the 1930s, the title regularly echoes our sad era, to the point that it is sometimes disturbing.

With three games released in just five years and which is more all excellent, the Spanish Postmodern Adventures once again won their bet with The Dark Rites of Arkham. We finish the game as we turn the last page of a copy of the Crypt Tales, be covered with chills and, above all, with a smile.
