THe Callisto Protocol Finally let himself approach Cologne and we know a little more about the one who intends to take over the torch of the franchise Dead Space. By founding your own studio Striking Distance and freeing himself of the EA that closed Visceral Games in 2017, the director now has carte blanche. What we saw at Gamescom is a pure independent AAA game. The action took place in 2320 in a high-security prison, the black iron prison, a sort of space alcatraz. Following a curious pandemic, the prisoners turn into monsters and our avatar, Jacob Lee, will have to find a way to escape to save his skin.
If the starting pitch remains quite classic, it will be above all its realization that could make the difference. The game is beautiful with very good lighting and a sound design compatible with 7.1. No doubt playing the title with a helmet or home cinema should raise the tension of a skull or make your neighbors crisis. The developers also assured us that the game would be playable on old gen Even if you didn't have to expect the same graphics, the game was designed primarily for more greedy configurations.
Horror Immersive Sim
Jacob Lee manifests his anguish on the screen and there is a remarkable work on the animations of the character. He looks at the player at the corner of a corridor. Stress is palpable and seems to stick to his skin. The meetings with the mutants are particularly good. Just see the blood cover our character dynamically to get an idea of the level of violence. By derailers the game seems to invite the player more to the body by body than in Dead Space where it was rather the last resort. The squid system was reminiscent of a boxing fight with a particularly natural swing before dropping his weapon on an enemy's skull.
It is probably on these details that The Callisto Protocol This is particularly immersive. We also discovered a new enemy capable of becoming invisible and climbing on the walls. Another was to be shot as soon as possible, or else to see him recover his strength (and limbs) like an axolotl that would have gone wrong. We already imagine the gameplay configurations when we have to face several types of enemies at the same time. The AIA has been completely reworked since Dead Space and the enemies do not all adopt the same behavior in relation to the situations encountered. During the presentation, we were far from cruising under ammunition and we hope that the same will be true in the final game. By bringing the player closer to his opponents and pushing them into the mix, we might well gain in tension.
In general, we feel that developers want to keep a certain hand on their communication to leave us the surprise of the discovery and that is so much better. What we have seen has reassured us about the quality of the title which clearly shows its ambitions. While EA is about to release a remake from the first part, the developers of Striking Distance keep a bit ahead of themselves to release The Callisto Protocol by the end of the year. The team assured us mordicus that the game would come out well on December 2. One thing is certain, the next few months will be under the sign of Survival Horror.
