Adapt the franchise Ninja Turtles is a deemed perilous exercise. Between the trilogy of nanars from the 1990s, the Fucking comebacks of the 2000s and the adaptations of video games missed since Konami's standard game, no one had really given back the coat of arms of this series of youth dear to the thirty-year-olds. Even prestigious studios like Platinum Games have broken their teeth on the shell of turtles! Building on its success since the renaissance of flagship licences in the 1990s, it is Dotemu who took up the challenge with this new beat them all thought like a merry mess playable up to six players both locally and online. Montreal developers of Tribute Games (Panzer Paladin, FinthookDid he succeed in abjuring the curse?

Cowabunga!

First thing that hits the eye for any 2D amateur, these are the typical graphics of the 16 bit era. While Streets Of Rage 4, Also published at Dotemu was modelled on Mega Drive, the developers of Tribute games chose to pay tribute to the Super Nintendo. And it must be said that on this point the result is perfectly mastered. The colors are shimmering, the animations licked and varied. Seeing his fallen companion in the fight reinvigorated by a portion of pizza makes his little effect.

The game features a luxurious casting with seven characters: the four turtles Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, journalist April ready to brandish her microphone, Master Splinter and Casey Jones whom we unlock after a first run. Each of them has its own iconic weapons, its own range of blows and super powers. Basically, one chooses his truble according to whether it is faster or less powerful. Some have more lengthening to attack remotely, others are a little more nervous to play. Michelangelo took creatine and is the fastest of all. Donatello compensates for its slowness by the reach of its stick, Leonardo is the most balanced and powerful Raphael but at a short distance. All are very pleasant to play and allow to vary approaches according to mood.

In pizzas we trust!

As in Streets Of Rage, we find a system of traditional cups to seize and send valdinguer the soldiers of the Foot Clan In the decor. Pressing the X button several times makes it possible to chain an automatic combo, which can then be embellished with variants by propelling for example the unfortunate victim into the air before launching his special. They cost one to three bars and unlock as the turtles are played. To reload its special bar, simply segregate into a corner and leave one of the triggers pressed down. A few seconds later, our character is ready again to launch a special.

The animations of super powers are particularly funny!

Like booms and krangs

In multiplayer, this point of gameplay did seem a little too generous, not to say completely abused. While enemies can interrupt us during this provocation, it is too easy to load his bar and it promotes excessive use of special powers rather than more traditional combos. However, it is very funky to see Michelangelo swing on a small dance step of the most beautiful effect to load his mana and provoke the bad guys. Where use of supers Streets of Rage 4 was largely tempered by the fact that each use was reducing our life bar as much, Tribute Games might have had to propose a similar penalty system for supers. It would probably have brought some chilli to the too reckless player I am.

To this is added aerial or diving attacks, dash, significantly less useful loaded attacks than in Streets of Rage and other small significant variants. The last original point in co-op, one of the triggers of the controller allows to share its life bar with its injured partner. An original idea to solidarize gameplay and support the weakest. You will understand, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is above all a matter of fun and technique. A game goes everywhere that will suit both old and newcomers alike.

Splinter Cell

The levels sequence at all speeds in different emblematic places of the series with direct references to Turtles in Time and cartoon. To try to vary the pleasures, Tribute Games also varied the horizontal scrollings with passages on Overboards which are more reminiscent of shoot-up even if these are not the most inspired levels. The game offers a fairly varied range of enemies with a few nuggets like these cheese monsters melted like a delicious pizza. In general, crude oil Foot Clan less resistance than thugs Streets Of Rage, especially since it has no Friendly Fire by default, which makes the game more permissive between stick bourrins. The possibility remains of escaping the blows of a roulade in order to get off the ground, particularly useful against the bosses even if again the mechanics still lighten the difficulty, because of a frame lenient invincibility.

Revival retro forced, Tribute Games has also left the beautiful part to nostalgia. We find the credits of the cartoon sung by Mike Patton and contributions of the group Wu-Tang with the songs Ghostface Killah and Raekwon. The rest of the compositions were again made by Tee Lopes, noticed in recent years for their work on Sonic Mania and DLC Mr. X Nightmare, also tested in our columns. Beyond the Madeleine aspect of Proust, OST fits perfectly with the overall atmosphere of the title and Tribute Games has very well transcribed the folklore of the ninja turtles.

Critique - Streets Of Rage 4 Mr. X Nightmare DLC – Retrolove at the first night!

Among the regrets, one would not have been against a challenge worthy of this name, a little more variety in the levels and more combative bosses to lengthen the lifespan of the title. The final boss gets snuffed without bunting for example. But if we ignore these few flaws, Shredder's revenge remains a particularly accessible and pleasant game to play controller in hand and, who knows, maybe Tribute Games just laid the first stone for a second more muscular episode...

TMNT trailer

Yes, you thirty-year-old player who sometimes sings Ninja Turtles in the shower, this game is dedicated to you. Perfect for an evening between buddies and a pretext for eating pizza, the last born of Tribute Games shows again the talent of the Montreal studio and Dotemu's love for retro games. Resolutely focused on fun and despite too much technique, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains a very good aperitif to share with friends. We would certainly have liked more content and challenge. But like Streets Of Rages 4 when it's released, let's cross our fingers so that future modes will soon be proposed to extend the short life of the title. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it's kind of like a pizza four cheeses supplement cheese, we eat it too fast and whatever happens, even if it's not very balanced! A guilty pleasure you can't resist!
