  • When's next Mario and Luigi ?

With Super Mario RPG released in 1996 on Super NES, Nintendo made a double step aside, on the one hand by turning from the traditional platform towards role play, on the other hand by entrusting the mustachu plumber to Square, pioneer and undisputed master of the JRPG. There is no doubt that the massive craze around Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Seiken densetsu or Chrono Trigger had to justify Nintendo's choice for Square as evidence. A winning bet that propelled Super Mario RPG third place on the podium of the most sold games in Japan during the year of its launch. Almost thirty years later, the remake of the mustachu plumber's adventure, which gave birth to the excellent licenses, is worth the effort. Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario ?

Mario in Wonderland

In the history of Nintendo and player memory, alliances between the small craftsman and other studios are as rare as brilliant. Before the divorce is consumed, it is impossible not to think of the collaboration of the troupe Rare, Retro Studio and Nintendo for Donkey Kong Country. Or when Nintendo granted his license Zelda in Capcom, Minish Cape redefines players' habits with panache. Nintendo and Sega? We'll answer you. F-Zero GX whose candles are no longer counted to hope for a new opus or even a remake. More recently, the Japanese firm even dared to unthinkable by letting Ubisoft realize a Tactical RPG of Mario with the idiot rabbits. Always for the best. In the same vein, Super Mario RPG does not derogate from the rule and the contribution of Fire Square appears throughout the game.

Super Mario RPG

By breaking from the beginning the codes of the triptych Princess in danger, kidnapping Bowser and rescue in good and due form, one owes much to Square in the liberation of the Mario formula (and to the emancipation of the princess vis-à-vis her captors). From the start, Bowser was doubled by the band of Forgeroi who took Peach in the pass. Nick Fury despite him, Mario ends up encircling joyful lurons starting with Mallow, a whiny cloud boy and Geno a doll possessed by a heavenly spirit that recalls Pinocchio. These Avengers of the poor will fortunately be joined by Bowser and Peach, the most counter-natured alliance possible but which is so enjoyable. See Peach playing the artificators with the psychobomb attack or throwing therapy spells to treat Bowser has something terribly regressive. A few scenes make us sketch a smile even if we don't yet reach the comic well-barred of the show of the two brothers Mario and Luigi which will mark 2003 on GBA.

Super Mario RPG

This is indeed the first time that Mario was expressly making his number in the mid-1990s. A trademark of Mario RPG, humour occupies a central place in the experience. Always mutic, Mario mimics situations or raises his arms to the sky to mark his emotions accompanied by a drum bearing and accelerated animations. On this point, Super Mario RPG is probably aimed at a younger audience. The jokes remain measured and often very first degree. Yet the strength of the game lies in its ability to generate raw imaginations. We also feel the wink supported by Nintendo's past toy builder. From the character of Geno to the dolls and the crazy variety of the bestiary met, there is a side Toy Story very pleasant, like a paw Alice in Wonderland. The remake remains very respectful of the original material well anchored in the 9O years. If the scenario remains conventional in form, it reserves some fun surprises without matching the memorable twists of Mario And Luigi: Superstar Saga and its sequel.

So do make the little puppets

As the Forgeroi band comes from another dimension, the game is completely free-wheeled question artistic direction and common sense of the term. It goes in every direction, designs are very successful and bosses are numerous. The different worlds each have their color palettes and their well-defined style. We will visit volcanoes as much as the peaks of the sky, mountains or desert dunes. The graphics are fine and colorimetry dazzles the retina on Switch OLED. By focusing each painting on the essentials and entering the course on a black background, the contrast gives the impression of evolving in doll houses. The screen of the stats of the characters at the end of the fighting recall the puppet theatre of the Commedia dell-arte. The game is also not vile in quality cinematics, madeleine of Proust expensive in the 9O years where the player expected the cinematics as rewards and promises of a bright future for the media.

Super Mario RPG

However, past the graphic buff, what is the title gameplay worth in 2023? As they say in the jargon, there is no good JRPG without serious gameplay (Sea of Stars recently paid for it in our columns). And it is probably on this point that Mario RPG only seems to outline his subject. If the fighting remains dynamic and without time dead thanks to a system in real semi-time, the developers did not dare to push the bases of the original game by integrating the monster contributions of franchises Mario and Lugi and Paper Mario. And the seven years that separate Super Mario RPG of the Mario and Luigi have been the occasion of a crazy gestation in terms of renewal of the formula. By contenting itself with a simple button to counter an enemy attack and reducing the special attacks to elementary actions, the game scuttles a part of its pleasure and gives the impression of staying only on the surface. These actions will only turn the joystick or hammer the A button without other subtleties where Mario and Luigi Indeed, they offered true depth (and complexity) with multiple interactions to be executed with fly hair and waves of attacks to avoid adversaries sometimes very tenacious.

Mariology for those who lose

Of course chronologically one cannot blame the first jet of the contributions of the works that resulted from it, but one cannot stop thinking about it while playing. And that's also how we distinguish a good remake from a remaster. On the other hand, attacks that cannot be avoided reduce the interest of the esquives. Basically, while waiting to launch our special power on three, we end up spaming special attacks and drinking maple syrup to recover PM. In this game and in the absence of limitations to the game economy, there is no doubt that Mario and his band will have an advanced rate of diabetes at the end of the adventure. The game also plays the card of the bid of enemies met rather than on the intensity of the fighting, the latter only for a fraction of seconds in most cases even in maximum difficulty mode. Fortunately, it is quite easy and recommended to avoid a large part of the fighting so as not to lose the taste of battles. In any case, the game is more than permissive and has almost no difficulty, except marginally in the last chapter and again.

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG only touches on what makes the salt of a good RPG, namely the personalization of the skills and equipment of the characters. Minimum strict on this side with some badges that can be equipped to avoid being altered by certain spells, in any case very unbinding. In short, and despite a certain dynamism, the fights are chained like a specification to fill. Global balance gives so much hand to the player that choosing between health points, attack or magic only a micro-marginal influence on the states of our heroes. I thus increased only magic without any major difficulty concerning my other features. Between the fights, the game tries to renew itself with mini games not always very inspired or very precise, especially for the phases of platforms tainted with readability problems on depth. The game would have been the typical candidate for the 3DS. There it is common to fall into the void the fault to a perspective not always happy, trademark of the 3D games of the time.

Super Mario RPG is a love letter to the original game, a direct address to fans of the very first Mario RPG. Despite its cute graphics and a world full of ideas, however, the title has suffered somewhat for years. In almost thirty years, water has sank under the rivers and it is difficult not to compare the original with its otherwise more accomplished suites, Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario. Super Mario RPG thus falls into the trap of the remake which does not free enough of its original material, for doubtless fear of mourning the memories of the elders. The title thus remains a Proust madeleine to be reserved for the curious or nostalgic of the era where Square was still of this world. A nice trip to Wonderland. Simple and too superficial, however, the combat system will be a fun-mouth for the toddlers and an excellent entry in the matter before tasting the retrogaming with the crazy saga Mario and Luigi or waiting for the memorable Paper Mario, cult game of the Gamecube which will soon be entitled to a remaster more than expected to the editorial.
